BrickPicker YouTube Video Channel

While I am getting closer to releasing a long overdue update to BrickPicker, now is a good time to release some content that I was hoping to release with the updated site.  @belljohn has been talking with Ed and I for a very long time and has spent a lot of time in creating a series of Brickvesting videos that he is happy to share on the BrickPicker YouTube Channel.  I am hoping to see this expand this into a bunch of different topic series and welcome any of you that are interested in working on some videos to reach out to me and we can work on it.  Set reviews, investing tips, set builds, etc.

It's not easy to speak for ~15 minutes, but Brook does an amazing job covering this topic. We will be publishing more videos soon from belljohn.  We hope you enjoy it.  Who knows, maybe soon you will see Ed showcase his amazing words of wisdom in video. That will be a real treat.

Wonderful! Great initiative @belljohn! Noticed a few inconsistencies between what Brook says and what is displayed in the sidebar, and (at least for me) the comparison picture just shows a semi-opaque placeholder box, but the entire 14 mins went by fast and were surprisingly informative. Nice collection in the background as well.

Yes, I noticed at least 3 times I said the wrong information, but the text should be right.  I am going to post the data and photos in a day or two for everyone to see to go along with it.  Thanks for watching.  I have a lot more written up, but give me more ideas if you have them.

I like the "investor" angle on this. Taking that angle further, what about:

- Limited Editions. Perhaps you can review a list of special editions, either very limited in run # or first series limited editions like 10179 .....

- Smallest Themes. Review small, short term themes like Scooby, Lone Ranger, Spongebob etc. You could do a top ten list of those

- Most valuable themes. Review CAGRs by theme.

In general I plan to focus on current releases and use a key feature of the set as link to the past.  I have the next 8 shows already planned, but viewer input will certainly sway what I cover.  I still have the basics to cover over the next few.

First edition releases will be a great topic if the new MF happens to be one.  Any ideas about other advertised, yet mass market, first edition/limited editions besides 10179 and 4x4 crawler?

Maybe the employee christmas present exclusives or the new factory building sets..... those are as exclusive as it gets....

That would be cool, but I don't have any of them.  I think their release is too limited for mass appeal.  Same with the comic-con releases.  Keep the ideas coming though.

Coincidental, but I felt it very symbolic when sirens were heard in the background around the 10:20 mark as he spoke about everyone's dark years ?

Also, "LEGO likes to play with us just as much as we like to play with LEGO".  Wow, what a line ????? Truer words were never spoken.

Fantastic job!  I gotta admit tho - opportunity missed at ~:34 when you said, "I've got you, I've got my set, I've got my shirt - everything is good."

No!  Everything is awesome!

You're right, that was too obvious and I missed it.  You can start on the MST3K version.

Hey Folks.  Here is the write up of my first show.  It covers a few different topics.  I will put summaries of the shows in blog form once the new site is up a running.

Big Lego Boxes

Welcome to How Big Is It.  Are you a Lego Collector?  Are you a Lego investor?  Then keep on reading.

Have you ever picked up a lego box and thought, wow this is big?  Have you ever tried to wrap a lego box and thought, I can’t believe it takes a whole roll of wrapping paper?  Of course, kids will always want the set in the biggest box, but adults can also be swayed by a big box.  It is a key marketing decision.  For the most expensive adult oriented sets, Lego has started to make a few smaller and denser boxes.  Why?  I don’t know. Some possible reasons are shipping costs, display space, or using less packaging.

The last 4 modulars are all about the same piece count and weight, but the box has been shrinking.  This is good for the investor since they are easier to store.

2013 Palace Cinema (10232)         0.89 cubic feet
2014 Parisian Restaurant (10243)    0.78 cubic feet
2015 Detective Office (10246)        0.78 cubic feet
2016 Brick Bank (10251)            0.70 cubic feet

I started thinking about box size when I received my 76042 SHIELD Helicarrier in March 2015.  I opened the shipping box from Lego and couldn’t believe how huge the box was.  At that point it was the largest set that I owned in the largest box.  I didn’t realize the size before ordering it because I had never seen it in a store.  I had only seen it online.  I would guess many of these large sets are ordered without the purchaser really knowing what they are getting.  To prevent more surprises, I have collected a variety of sets for comparison.

So how big is it?  How big is the SHIELD Hellicarrier box?

Helicarrier (76042) - 52041 cm3 or 1.84 ft^3

Star Destroyer Microfighter (75033)    - .027 ft^3 -  69x smallermicro.thumb.jpg.eb870f088a4a3e2055b7a7824b8cc34c.jpg

Now I am am really curious.  What are the all time biggest Lego boxes?  I have done my research, and now I present to you:

Before I start, you should write down your list and see how many to get right.

Here is a photo of the top 10 minus the Millennium Falcon (waiting for sale) and Death Star 2016 (morally opposed) in 4th and 6th place respectively.

Well, were you surprised?  How many of the top 10 sets were on your list?  If you have any other cool comparisons you want to see, let me know.

According to Lego, the new Millennium Falcon (75192) box will be 96228 cm^3 in size (3.40 ft^3).  That is the same size as the Helicarrier box plus the Sydney Opera House box (see comparison above).

Until next time, Lego on!
