I reckon this set will be done by November. The evidence is that Lego cannot produce enough sets and are fully aware that people  are buying more than one to resell. One thing I know about Lego is how sensitive they are to their image, particularly with families.

Is it easier to kill it, admit defeat and focus on other lines? No more grumbles from customers.

That said, I don't know why Lego didn't have a limit of 2 (even one) per customer when last week's fresh batch became available. It was either:

  • Short-sighted;
  • Stupid;
  • Intentional to sell out quickly.

Anyway, that's my take.

Nope. Well November of 2018 maybe.

Might want to give this a read.

Yes, read that when it came out.

But goalposts change all the time. Why still have a limit of 5, knowing the demand?

maybe because if they produced for actual demand of this set it would disrupt production schedules for other themes  even though these rockets sell better than anything, they can't just produce only these rockets.  so they produce the amount they planned on doing , do  a second run and maybe another run sometime next year.   then pull the plug.  the change in language on the website is identical to what happened with research  institute which  also demonstrated a similar pattern of inability to maintain any online stock for any duration.   everyone who is so sure about availability throughout 2018 just because of what someone read on the internet or what some corporate guy was quoted as stating really needs to  think again.  of course they are going to say that. what happens  if the guy comes out and says, well actually we are only going to do 2 more runs so make sure to get one quick.  that will not go over well.

I agree with what you say about the production schedule, which is probably why it has gone TOOS rather than SOLD OUT. They do plan to make more but there is no production slot in system at this time within the parameter window so it defaults to TOOS.

Of course they can´t just produce rockets but they will have regular production meetings and will be able to shift sets up and down in priority and advance or delay the last ever production date - look at TH and Pet Shop as two examples. Ecto 1 is another closer to home.

It´s a licensed set  with no unique parts and it makes sense to squeeze it till supply outstrips demand, especially as sales are starting to flatline - we´ll likely get the mid year financial results next week, but that´s another topic!

BTW 14 units sold on Ebay europe today, the most in several weeks. Price is trending down though.

Well did you get the confirmation? I talked to the staff in person and learned it was just their inventory displaying false stock, to my knowledge they never yet had one set of 21309 physically in store. I've tried to reserve one multiple times, but always got a cancellation half an hour later...

Canceld in Regensburg but in Erlangen it worked. Reserved 2 and they split the 15€ discount but after calling store manager it was down to 104.99€. And they only had 2. Got a 20€ gift card valid till 19.9 . works with 10% coupons :)

zusammengebaut.com, another big german Lego-Fan-Site postet a pretty strongly worded counter to the Promobricks article, citing their sources in Billund confirming it will be produced further and calling Promobricks untrustwothy and panic-mongering (Even if not by name).

So at this point pretty much anyone can choose what to believe and find newssites to support their stance (Just like real life... )

Even there will be another one or more runs for 21309, the demand will be never covered by the production and we will have the same situation as for today....

This means that the August statement from LEGO that the product will be available throughout the whole year 2018 is simply not true.

If they continue with the same production schedule and max 5 online limit it will sell out again. Perhaps someone somewhere will be inspired to change things around, especially once the Xmas orders and new 2017 product lines launches have been fulfilled.
