Wow. 2 hours ago there were still plenty of the smyths offers available. Now they have just gone completely.

3 Smyths, 2 argos and 3 sainsburys, 2.5 hours.  This is what I managed to pick up. I didn’t even really want the Berlin.  But my Boss is German, so likely I’ll give it to him.

Most of the Smyths deals were gone by lunchtime.  Within an hour of something being posted on HDUK it’s dead.  On the upside prices on the sale items will be depressed on eBay for the next few weeks, so if you want any of the sets for 30% of retail.

Just got from my local store. Got 4 each of the Berlin and Burj Khalifia sets. I was lucky to get them as I was slow off the mark as I initially decided to pass on them when I saw the post a few minutes after it was initially posted. Completely forgot to look for the Ferrari - I doubt they had any left in stock anyway.

Fenix_2k1, I'm from the North West as well. Just wondering where abouts you're from? My local Smyths are Speke and St. Helens.

A win-win scenario. I think I'm giving the general public more credit than they're due. So is this face-to-face cash sales? Does any set (within reason), if deeply discounted, pique your interest as a quick flip? I'll have to test the waters with my locality using this strategy. Many thanks for your response.

Sorry for going slightly off topic with these guys.

There's a site over here called Adverts.ie, not sure what the Uk equivalent, but something like Craigslist. Fees are tiny so can sell at well below ebay rates, sales are generally cash and people come and collect from me. Sometimes it's paypal and I either get people to cover fees or send it by gift so no fees. If there's shipping involved I get them to pay it.

With a big enough discount most sets can turn a profit, but obviously we only have so much cash to spend, so you still need to choose wisely. Many on here regret their 50%/60% off Chima purchases.

There are some types of sets which I think are general winners. When like today Smyths reduce a €100 set to €50, it's hard not to win. Obviously you have a good discount to start with, but also these sets are substantial and look it. The importance of this is that people want to get bang for their buck and if they're seeing a big set at a decent price they're more likely to bite.

The general public don't think about Lego as much as us and it's not necessarily that they're stupid, they just don't have our knowledge and don't react as fast as us. For example on the Ferrari Truck I visited 4 of the 6 Smyths in Dublin today picking up all 3 sets that were in those stores, so general public hasn't had the opportunity to buy at €50.

The Ferrari at half price and those Architecture sets are good deals and fall within my 40% off minimum rule. I´d avoid the architecture ones this time around as they are just released and will likely be around for a further 3 years with sporadic discounts. The Ferrari will be done this year or next, at the latest. Mine cost 74 so  50 is obviously much better to start with as it will sell for RRP at Xmas at worst.

Appreciate the insight, might look into something similar. Incredibly one of my closer Smyths still shows stock of the Burj Khalifa online now (didn't make it out today to go look for any)

Cheers guys it is good to see them up.

Getting back on topic I noticed people have posted that they have managed price matches at Argos and TRU. 1 question are you having to show stock in a local store to get the PM's?

T and Cs says local store should have stock in order to price match but ultimately depends on the manager that's on duty. I rocked up at 7pm with my two kids, so there was a skeleton staff on and they just looked at me, recognised me and the kids and didn't even bother to check whether there was stock and scanned it it.

Ah k. I figure i should be covered then if i go to TRU before I go pick up my reserved items from the nearby Smyths.

They were taken aback by the size of that discount for the Ferrari truck and did check it on their own machine before putting it through. So be prepared to be kept waiting depending on who is putting the sale through

Yep my TRU wanted to see stock, mainly due to the huge reduction, luckily Smyths in Aberdeen had them in stock. But offer times I've just showed a screen shot and that was OK. Depends on how miserable the person on the till is, yesterday mine was b****y miserable!!!

I've been using the same technique for six months now, I've had a limited starting budget for investing in Lego which has increased a lot in the last months due to this technique.

For those in the UK, this weekend is the Daily mail free Lego giveaway. You need to purchase and redeem in an Asda or WH Smiths I believe.

These things will flood eBay for the next two to three years and sell for a couple of quid each. Save your time, it's precious. There's better ways to make money.
