LOL - I've had it with Technic since the Unimog bombed. This theme is too risky as 1% are gold and 99% are manure. They also take up to much space for too long.

It's looking like caterham is a john lewis exclusive.

AFAIK mini, has only ever been sold at John Lewis..

T1 van was at TRU online for a short while, can't see it there anymore.

I think for the caterham exclusivity to end will be next year so if you want it in 2016 it seems like now is a good of a time to get it.

John Lewis in Reading has several T1 and Mini on the shelves, both with seal codes 36S6 so they ain't done yet. I'm hoping that they drop the C7 price from £79.99 back to RRP, who do they think they are: Hamleys or WH Smith?

I've just backordered a C7 from LEGO Shop at Home and it should ship on 21OCT.

I've not seen the caterham in hamleys or WHSMITH. Both those stores always sell lego above RRP anyway

I was thinking of picking one of these up for a personal build, anyone know why the set is priced so high?

Caterham - 773 pieces - £74.99

Beetle - 1167 pieces - £74.99

F40 - 1158 pieces - £74.99

I think it's the amount of printed pieces. No stickers in S7 which is worth the markup imho.

Don't forget that Ideas sets get a nicer, thicker box and a fancier manual. Adds to the price per part difference.

This is true. I parted out an Ecto 1. I was going to bin the empty. But thought, let's auction it for 99p start. It went for £10.50 + P&P.

Well, that depends on the subject of the set. Not every Ideas set is connected to a license, though most are. For example the Birds set which doesn't have an external license.

On the other hand, in the Ideas program the original designer of the submission gets a percentage of the sales as well. This will naturally be marked up on the price because LEGO wants to make a healthy profit and not have that commission eat away from their profit.

So if you take the Ferrari F40 vs the Caterham Seven, then the main differences are:

• stickers vs printed pieces
• the original designer sales percentage mark up for the Caterham

And who knows ... Maybe the license fee for Ferrari on the F40 set is smaller (percentage wise) because the total license fee is spread out over many different Ferrari sets, while the license fee for Caterham is exclusively pressing on the Caterham Seven set.

I don't think Caterham would squeeze the license fee as it seems that they consider this more like a marketing opportunity, so pushing more sales would be more beneficial for them.

However, IDEAS sets face a much faster and specialised approval process, including giving them priority in the production logistics when they get approved. Normal LEGO sets tend spend 2-3 years in the pipeline before going on sale. For IDEAS this tends to be below 1 year. Plus the IDEAS program itself is an overhead. Therefore it is safe to assume that LEGO is facing quite the increased costs here compared to ordinary sets, which is somewhat reflected in the price.

On the other hand they save on R+D costs as they only have to tweak the original design rather than make it from scratch and they never use new moulds for Ideas either.

Built my copy and it looks nice enough and in reasonable scale alongside T1, F40 and Mini. Definitely overpriced for the part count but the printed parts do look great.

Still think the original IDEAS design with working steering looks better.

Discounted by 30% on Boxing Day, and gone within 2 hours. Saw the Caterham discounted at 8:50 AM. Had breakfast with wife and kids. Checked again at 11 AM and already unavailable.

Sale started midnight, took 11 hours to sell out and you missed it? Nevertheless, last night chose not to buy, time will tell if wise or not...

Irrespective of how it gets on as an investment, it struck me as a good price for suck a beautifully packaged and designed set. It felt overpriced at RRP, but for a touch over £50 I’d have been happy with that for a personal collection.

I think it’s going to do very well in the afterlife though.

I have one built and on display next to my Creator Expert car models. And I have a few boxes stashed away. Not a set to go really deep on in I think. But it is a nice build and excellent looking model with a pretty and presentable box. In time it will appreciate well.
