I'm seeing 20%, 50%, and 70% off at Kroger.  Bunch of regular sets 20%.  A few regular sets (some Speed Champions, pastel classic bricks) at 50% at one store.  Holiday endcap sets (Dobby, Dreamzzz zomething, Minecraft blocky something set #274, creator monkeys, maybe an overpriced Star Wars mech) were 50% at one store and 70% at another.  Both I saw were Marketplaces, but I wpuld assume seasonal endcap sets would be across the board.

Also, it has the new FRI designation on Amazon = Kiss of Death ;)

Aside from the Lunar vs. Chinese NY controversy, I don't get it. The set looks great, is a nice family building experience, and at $80 cheap by Lego standards.

If it starts with an 8, it's gonna stagnate

Sadly, I'm aware. I bought into the hype around the spring lantern festival.

Just don't get why this set is so hated, at $80 there should be consumer demand.

Monkie Kid also has spectacular sets. Yet there is little demand. The theme / IP is the main driver of demand, not the specific set. A bad Harry Potter set will outsell the best MK / CNY sets by 1000x.

I haven't sold a single Chinese set.  I think they are nice sets if you are into them for building.   But there doesn't seem to be a market for resale.

BS.  Politics hasn't stopped consumers from buying objects made by or depicting Chinese people.  Prove me wrong and I'll admit it.

The Lego sets are culturally specific. I’m guessing that may have something to do with it. I don’t think it’s racism but apathy.

Exactly.  And apathy ain't political.

As much as I like these some of these sets, when reselling you are asking for a premium markup that requires someone to reach deep down and really want these sets. If I see coworkers and fellow Americans losing jobs all around me or having to pay more for common goods like eggs and toilet paper I would rather pay more for a fantasy (escapism) like Star Wars or nostalgia simplicity like classic Lego than to buy in to what one may attribute an even a small reason for some of our economy’s woes, whether valid or invalid. Its not really a matter of dislike, in most cases, but “would you rather”. But by all means, good sale on Lunar New Years sets, load up, the parade looks great, bought one for half off myself.

There is a huge difference between the Chinese government and the Chinese people.  Using your logic, I shouldn't invest in Babe Ruth memorabilia since I hate those damn Yankees.  I think that the Chinese government is terrible and am really leary of the threat they are towards this country.  That being said, when I buy batteries for my solar array, I buy Chinese ones since they are the only ones making a decent one in the entire world.  And I will continue to do so until another country learns to make a battery near as good somewhere in the vicinity of the same price.  Again, using your logic, I wouldn't be able to get some of the heart medications that I take because China is the only ones making the pills.  I find that deplorable.  But do I let my heart kill me or support China by buying their meds?  Fear China but don't blame them.  Blame the US and other countries that moved their labs to China to take advantage of cheap labor.

**I apologize to the mods and readers.  I just realized that this is taking place in the USA sales thread.  I thought we were in another.  Feel free to delete my posts.

Isn’t the conversation about how the Chinese themed sets don’t sell well?  It could be subconsciously political but who cares. We’re being force fed in our daily lives what to think and believe (and Lego is guilty of this) whereas most people just want to escape the doldrum of reality. That’s why nostalgia sells. I bought Rivendell because it’s a beautiful set that I enjoy looking at. The Chinese lantern gardens with a giant glowing Ox doesn’t do it for me so I have no interest.

Those sets sell great in China. I think it's smart that MK is online only in the US. They just take up valuable shelf space in US BAM stores.

There were similar arguments on here about Sydney Opera House, Taj Mahal, Tower Bridge, European soccer stadiums and so forth. Unless you're an expat from that country or in that country, who in the US actually wants to buy and display that set?

I remember when the complaint was that some sets were only available in their region, making them expensive on the secondary markets. 80101 and 80102 appreciated quickly, but when 80103 became available everywhere, its value stagnated and eventually it sold at a discount.

I mean, I think the lessons learned for us brickpickers is 1) low or no ROI. Better off investing elsewhere, and 2) wait for the (likely) discount if you want them for yourself.

Probably like several of you, I thought the guaranteed short shelf life would make them appreciate in value quickly, faster than a Winter Village set, but I'm still sitting on year of the lion, rat, ox and now rabbit sets. I may have to seriously consider the suggestion above to remove them from my inventory and part them out into my bricklink store.

Since this thread is already derailed, I remember the same arguments about LR and GS and both turned out to be great investments. Obviously previous returns are not guarantees of future ones

Lone Ranger and Galaxy Squad?

I think we need to realize who the core base customers are for Lego in the USA and especially in the aftermarket and what sets will most likely appeal to them. Soccer stadiums have nothing to do with politics or racism that I am aware of but I avoid them because of the decreased segment of potential customers just like MK and the “agenda” sets like 76215 and 40516 (I have built this and proudly display it in my office) this does not make me a bad person just smart with my money.

I think 80113 has a good chance of breaking the downward trend in the CNY sets as many people will be picking up 2 to add this as a Modular to their city. It is a beautiful looking set and I will be picking one up to build.

Whenever I get confused about strategy, I look to LR and am re-assured I know nothing.  Considering how cheap they could be had originally (RIP, TRU), the train and stagecoach both have amazing current prices.
