STAR WARS VIII - "The Last Jedi" - Movie Discussion

It seems to me that at every chance Rian could have done what the fans expected, he chose not to.  I haven't read every interview, but it seems his reasoning for his choices, is that it was the opposite of what the fans wanted, and that's it.  Some people like this, others don't.  I'd guess that if Luke had a more "expected" arc that this movie would have a more favorable perception among all the fans, even with all the other complaints.  I doubt the people that loved the movie would have been that disappointed if Luke was less of a grouch and more of a hero.

It seems Rian wrote the script around Hamill's Twitter persona.

Perfect example...

Rian Johnson:  Fans expect to learn about Snoke, Rey's Parents, etc. but I'm not going to do that, I'm going to show them where blue milk comes from.  It will be great because they don't expect to learn that.

I would have been fine leaving that particular nugget to the imagination.

Must be imported, there aren't sea cows on Tatooine.

The conversation probably was something like this:

JJ: Do whatever you want as long as Rey, Leia, Poe, Finn, and Kylo are alive at the end.

Rian: sure thing

Disney: keep the tall ewok guy alive too so we can sell more talking masks.

Rian: ok boss

The truth is that JJ, Rian, Kennedy and Disney Inc. all conspired to give us TLJ long before it was put on film.  Kennedy formed an all female writing committee going back to 2012:

"Kathleen Kennedy founded the group in 2012 when she succeeded George Lucas as president of Lucasfilm, putting Kiri Hart, a former film and TV writer, in charge of the unit. Ms. Hart’s first move was to make the story group entirely female, starting with Rayne Roberts and Carrie Beck. Both women had experience in film development but had also worked in other arenas — Ms. Roberts in magazine publishing, and Ms. Beck with the Sundance Institute."

Ms. Hart's resume isn't impressive:  http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1848009/#producer

Really nothing of note before Star Wars which makes you question Kennedy's judgement putting her in charge of writing a Billion dollar franchise.  Same goes for Rian Johnson.  A nobody before Star Wars with only a couple of minor films under his belt.  Nothing that interesting.

My personal opinion is that The Force Awakens was a tease to get fans on-board with this agenda based new trilogy.  If you don't like the direction of the new trilogy (and the Star Wars franchise in general) the best thing to do is just boycott future Star Wars films and products.

Great post.  This completely explains why Last Jedi utterly sucked and how Disney ruined Star Wars.  8 year old girls do not buy action figures and vehicles!

Ruin Johnson took the only good parts he inherited from Abrams and destroyed them in an act of ego, while working with this "story group."  In episode 9, they basically have to reboot the storyline because they blew everything off in episode 8.

When they bought it, I didn't want to immediately think, "Disney will ruin Star Wars" but it ended up happening.  Solo will be awful, you can count on that.  Rumors are the lead literally can't act.
