But New Hope didn’t recycle a previous Star Wars movie or take its characters into uncharacteristic paths like the past 2 have. These new movies’ main flaw is apathy. They’re not even trying to be new, just recycling the same formula like their Marvel cousins for the most part. This can only last so long before audiences get bored. Right. The OT borrowed a lot from other films and stories. But Lucas turned it into something new. And there was some stupid stuff even in Empire (the mynock cave). TLJ was just so bad. I would've even forgave the lame characterization of Luke Skywalker if the rest of the movie was great. Yes, the throne room scene was well done and I was even ok with killing off Snook (though it was handled poorly). But the rest of the film was just bad. The lame jokes, Luke tossing his lightsaber after the build-up in TFA, Canto Bight, twitch faced Benicio Del Toro (nobody even talks about him since his character was so irrelevant), Rose Tico, purple haired chick, Leia doing nothing after turning into Mary Poppins, Poe's regression as a character, Finn's complete waste as character (a step back from TFA), Rey being a nobody and acting like a nobody with force powers, recycled Hoth battle, slow motion space chase, running out of fuel (shouldn't be relied on as plot crutch in a Star Wars movie), BB8 driving an AT thing, Phasma showing up again and doing nothing again, Just for Men Phantom Luke handing off the gold dice to Leia (if he's basically a hologram that cannot be hit by a laser then how can he physically touch or hold something??? Is the Star Wars Universe one giant hologram then? Interesting to think about)..... and on. With all that said, I did like the cinematography. Edited February 25, 2018 by Mathew 6 Quote
jaisonline Posted February 25, 2018 Author Posted February 25, 2018 Mathew is dead on. Why does this movie kids suck? 1) the entire Crank Yankers opening scene. 2) Flying Supergirl Leia aka Mary Poppins. She couldn’t even rescue Ackbar. 3) Ackbar deserved a better death. Heck, even cartoon Kanan died with more honor and sacrifice. 4) RJ and KK must have never watched an OT SW movie because they didn’t know how Luke should behave in this film. That wasn’t Luke. 5) the entire Maz cameo was an utter embarrassment. She was in the middle of a video game-like fight but found time to FaceTime. The she flies off using a jet pack . Give me a break 6) the entire Luke Hologram plot was dumb. This movie was so close to being perfect. That is what gets me. So close but they confused Star Wars with Space Balls and Battlestar Galactica. 4 Quote

But yeah, a few changes could've made for a much better film. It's a shame that Leia was completely wasted. I'm sure in retrospect if they knew Fisher was going to pass away they would've written her character differently. The ninth film most likely was going to focus on her relationship with Kylo/Ben. A much better sequel trilogy could've been made by just abandoning Leia and Han's characters completely and focusing on Luke rebuilding and then failing at re-building the Jedi Order. zskid00 Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 This is the first Star Wars movie I won’t buy on Blu-ray. I have no interest in rewatching this any time soon, if at all. Quote

Alpinemaps Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 Not sure if this is more appropriate for the Episode 9 thread or here, but what the hell...Colin Trevorrow was excused because he wanted some changes to TLJ that LucasFilm wasn’t willing to make. Quote
Mathew Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 (edited) If that's true what Trevorrow is saying then it's pretty damning to Disney. When you watch the early press release stuff with Mark Hamill, it's clear he was un-happy with what they did with Luke in TLJ. He's done a 180 on things most likely because Disney is scrambling to write him back into the final film. To tie things together I think that's why he's being featured heavily in the home release marketing. He's the main reason people were excited about TLJ and it was a complete failure to treat his character with so little respect. Disney had one thing to do right with TLJ and that was to give fans a fitting send off for Luke Skywalker. Disney effed up so bad that not only did they not give fans the Luke Skywalker movie that they wanted but they totally neglected the new characters that we're supposed to care about. Except for Rose Tico. She was a failure on so many levels. TLJ bombed hard in China because Disney cynically thought just by including an "Asian" character in the movie that it would equal box office receipts. Heads should be rolling but since the film made just enough money worldwide it will take Solo bombing to see Kennedy fired. Looking forward to that. Edited February 25, 2018 by Mathew 4 Quote

Guest TabbyBoy Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 I've not seen TLJ yet and won't bother now after the slating I heard from friends. I'll not bother with any SW movie apart from the OT. Quote

Darth_Raichu Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 Was there any in-movie explanation on how C-3PO got his golden arm back? Or was it another epVII thing that was retconed by Rian Jonhson? Quote

Apparently the Resistance had time to do that while immediately beginning to evacuate in the 15 minutes between movies. Speaking of which, how did Maz have enough time to get involved in whatever that labour dispute was so shortly after her place was wiped out? No grass grows under her feet. 1 Quote
California92563 Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 I really had the phantom menace syndrom with this film. At first I liked it but as time grew on it aged about as well as a dog turd does in a microwave. 3 Quote
