Ed Mack Posted January 24, 2016 Author Posted January 24, 2016 Would it be worthwhile to take a few photos of a wide variety of the specific mini-figures for possible use on the cover? We've got quite a wide selection of figures and my brother (who is taking the photos) and I both have experience in graphic design, so if you're interested in anything like that it would be easy enough to do, since we've got everything set up anyways. Even if you've got something in mind for the cover, they could always be used as a end of book 'farewell' page of sorts—or in a general introduction. I figured I'd ask because you asked specifically for themed photos and if that's all you want we won't bother taking any general photos. If they are something you might be interested in, we can throw a few in there. I would recommend using your creativity skills to come up with photos of individual minifigures on the table of contents. I would especially concentrate on minifigures near the top of the list for each theme because they are usually more valuable and have a better chance of being in the book, especially with the larger themes. General photos right now seem to be covered for most part, so I would rather have people submit more creative stuff with minifigures in action shots or posing in some manner. Thanks Quote
Flanagan Bros Inc Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 Alright, sounds good. One last question: Quote Each new chapter will have one of these creative LEGO minifigure action scenes or dioramas attached to it in some manner, whether it’s in the introduction or later in the chapter. Some major themes might have multiple “special” images. These creations should include one or more minifigures from that theme. That is really the only rule for these images. They have to have theme based minifigures in the photos. Are these particular photos supposed to still have the rarer figures, or are these just general scenes for the theme? There's some themes I have some mini-figures for, but not anything on the list you provided (or anything particularly rare or noteworthy). I also have a pretty neat Lord of the Rings themed shot using Gandalf, Gollum, and Frodo . . . But they were some fairly common minifigures. Quote
RagingPorygon Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 To think that I've been working on this contest since Brickset announced this has amazed me, due to my short attention span and laziness. Nonetheless, I have finished another shoot of photos. Looking back at these photos, I would just like to share some advice to the competitors. You know, giving back to the community. Taking pictures with minifigures in outside/natural environments can produce excellent photos, both in quality and in creativity. All of my favorite photos were taken outside, and can really add a lot to the pictures. Minifigures in sets (both actual sets and in sets, as in "movie" sets) can also make the picture visually appealing. Putting the figures with their plastic buildings, vehicles, locations, etc. can add a sort of realism and character into the figures. Backdrops are another way of producing high quality photos, though I'm quite limited due to having just sketch paper as the best replacement (lol). Just remember, my personal advice (and I'm an amateur). Now, those who are experienced probably know this. As late as this advice is, I hope those who may be taking photos right now can take this with them later on and shoot some fantastic work, either right now or ten years from now. I really do wish good luck to all the contenders, and I absolutely cannot wait to see the photos that make it into the book. 1 Quote

Chinh Pham Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 If I may ask, is there a specific deadline when we have to have the photos submitted? Quote
Greenwing Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Are you extending the deadline for submission or is it still the end of January. Thank you. Quote
josdu Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Do you guys care for portraits? Like with just a minifigs head/face in the photo? Quote
Ed Mack Posted January 29, 2016 Author Posted January 29, 2016 The deadline has been extended. At least till the end of February. 1 Quote

Flanagan Bros Inc Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Awesome about the extension! My brother, who's the photographer, and I, who's the Lego enthusiast, are only able to get together for some shoots over the weekends. This gives us a bit more time to get more creative for the photos. Sadly, though, we don't really have any of the super rare minifigures at all. Quote
josdu Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I have a second batch to send in, but should I fill out the whole form again or just write the descriptions on the back? The latter would of course be easier . Quote
Ed Mack Posted February 19, 2016 Author Posted February 19, 2016 I just have to say there are some wonderful pictures. I don't know if my writing will be worthy...LOL Quote
Popeyez Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 How much longer is it going to be on the 29th? Quote
Ed Mack Posted February 20, 2016 Author Posted February 20, 2016 I think we will probably cut off entries on March 1st. We have to start reviewing photos and choosing some of the better ones to turn into the publishers. We really received some good stuff. The LEGO community constantly impresses me with their knowledge, generosity and talents. Quote
Flanagan Bros Inc Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Okay, I've got a nice batch of photos still to be entered. We had an unexpected death in the family that ate up the past couple weekends, so things have been pretty hectic. We're hoping to cram everything we haven't done into one final photoshoot this weekend. That leaves little time for post processing, editing, and filling out the forms and sending them your way. I don't know how many photos we'll have, so what would be the easiest method for filling out the release form with many photos? Can we just type it up on another sheet, print it with the form, sign both, scan them, and send them your way with the photos? Quote

What I did was fill out the form, scan the form, type up descriptions on separate sheets, then put the form and descriptions together in a PDF. I then sent the PDF along with the photos in one giant piece of mail to them via WeTransfer. They seemed to be O.K. with that method. I am truly sorry for your loss. I know what that can be like, and my heart goes to you and your family as you recover. I wish you good luck as you adapt to a changed life, and I hope that your hard work and effort will not be in vain and that it will make it into the book. 1 Quote

I figured I'd double check before typing them up, and to hand-write them would have been such a pain. Thanks, for the well wishes. It was my Grandpa. My whole family and extended family were close to him and many of us saw him weekly. He was getting up there in age and had dealt with quite a few health problems in recent years, so we knew his time was coming. What made it unexpected was that it was a simple, seemingly harmless knock to the head that led to his passing. A bit of a shock, but we've come to terms with it. Considering all his health problems it could have been a lot worse or more drawn out. Family gatherings will never quite be the same, but now everyone's just trying to get back into the swing of everyday life while doing our best to keep my Grandma company. Quote
