Popular Post Jeff Mack Posted August 31, 2015 Popular Post Posted August 31, 2015 (edited) We are working on a Daily Deals feature to help build new ways of keeping up with the deals. Keeping the Daily Deals all in one thread has been great. Sure the thread will get big, but based on feedback, we have 200+ members getting responses daily. One of my pet peeves for the daily deals is that members post great tips and tidbits but on most occasions, never post a direct link. What we would like to do is continue to enhance this system to give credit where credit is do and reward people for putting in the effort. If you look at the editor, there is now a yellow/orange dollar sign button for posting a deal. This will display a window where you can post the link to the deal. The link is the most important thing. Don't worry about affiliate codes or anything, we will take care of that. Just post the link. If there is a price and percent savings, please enter in those values. Don't need to enter in dollar signs or percent signs. We will work on getting the format correct. What this will do is go out, grab the title of the item, a photo of the item (for most popular stores, may not work in all places) automatically for you. Also, it will insert the information into a separate database that I will get into shortly. What you will get is an entry that will something like this. This example may not be an awesome deal, but for those that are great posts, you can click that and it will count to give that poster some credit. Over time, we will be able to see who is posting the most deals, who is finding the most awesome deals and find ways to thank them for helping everyone benefit. As I mentioned earlier, there is a new page on the forum http://community.brickpicker.com/daily-deals This will just display the actual deals that were post. Kind of summary of what products have been on discount or in stock, etc. Again, we will come up with more identifiers and filters, but for know we just want to start testing the actual system and see how its working and fix up the design. The more that people use this feature, the more we will be able to do to get you the deal the information in different formats. There are a lot of directions we can go in when the data is stored like this. Next week, we will most likely have an update that will allow you to pick a country that the deal is in so that you will be able to start filtering out deals via country, or retailer, etc. This feature is available in any forum, it is not just there in the Daily Deals thread. You can post a deal anywhere. We will also have a searchable feature coming that will allow you to search the current live deals and just insert that deal and not make a duplicate one. Hopefully you like the start of this. I feel it come become something very cool for the site. Thank you Edited August 31, 2015 by Jeff Mack 10 Quote

kensBricks Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Freaking sweet. This takes a load of tedious tracking and cross referencing off my plate; been trying to get at this type of stuff using PriceZombie and 3Camels and it got clumsy / overwhelming very quickly. Quote
dcdfan Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I thought deals based the percentage you have listed were frowned upon. I was under the impression we were only to post around 20% or so. Although I have posted 15% a couple of times... Quote

Although I have posted 15% a couple of times... If you found 10 Raptor Escapes at MSRP, would you consider that a deal? (I know, not exactly the same...) I think if most members use their judgement, this is a pretty neat feature. How will the deals "fall off" the list when they are no longer relevant? And yeah, filtering by country would be sweet. fuzzy_bricks Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I just posted a couple things to the Daily Deals thread. I put two of the same deal from different retailers in one post and it didn't add a break between the two. I attempted to edit the post and the "deal" formatting was removed. Not a big deal, was just trying to cut down on multiple posts, and I was able to edit the original post and reinsert the deal after the formatting was removed. Quote

gregpj Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 RE today? No. Last week? Sure. But I would have posted the availability in the RE forum, not the DD... Still nowhere to be found up here aside from a few lingering at Walmart in store. Well, as Jeff said you can post that as a deal from any thread! Quote
Alpinemaps Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Any chance we could get the "View Deal" button to open up the Deal in a new tab, as opposed to taking us away from the page we're on currently? Quote

Injecting the code in here really doesn't allow us to format it. We were trying to stay away from the way IPB uses the iFrames, but I don't think we have much choice. Editing of the deals really isn't going to happen. One of the best ways to get multiple in is to submit it, then go into a new post, submit a new one and let the new feature of the combining of posts put them together.Any chance we could get the "View Deal" button to open up the Deal in a new tab, as opposed to taking us away from the page we're on currently?Ok they will open in a new tab now. 1 Quote

I was under the impression we were only to post around 20% or so. Although I have posted 15% a couple of times...Depends on the deal and the set being discussed. For example, a MISB SSD for $399.99 is a sweet deal. It doesn't always have to be a discount. Edited August 31, 2015 by Ed Mack Quote
10230 Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 It would be great to see the place of the deal without having to click on 'view deal'. Say there is a deal at a KMart, I for instance wouldn't care as there is none around me anyway. I would like to see that immediately. In the past one could sometimes at least 'read' the link (without even having to hover a mouse, and hovering is quite useless on phones/tablets).Maybe that would be up to the poster, but we could make that 'good etiquette'. The person who is building this plugin is away for 2 days, by next week, this will be much more feature rich. This is really a test run to see if it grabbing what it needs to based on the links that are submitted. I will record all the feedback and work from there. Quote
fuzzy_bricks Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 FYI, clicking on the view deal button from your summary page just takes me to Google. It also appears that it does not pull in details from K-mart, I know you said some retailers may not work and they might be one. 1 Quote

gregpj Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 It's annoying to see all the deals showing up in the New Content view. It's so hard to find real threads since we name threads with the set name and # as well... any way to filter them out? Quote

gregpj Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Are you talking about the Activity Stream? Or just the New Content Link that is up in the upper right corner? In the "new content" link... http://community.brickpicker.com/new-content/ After playing around, I see a new option called "Deals" is now there. I can filter them out by just selecting "Topics" but then that misses out on blogs, etc ... I wish that "list" was a multi-select list rather than a single option. Quote
gregpj Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Yep you got it It's still cool.... just noisy when you're not in buy mode. Quote
Jeff Mack Posted September 1, 2015 Author Posted September 1, 2015 I have disabled the feature for the time being. We are going to work on the next few features and update it in a few days. I got enough of a hit list of items to work on to make it a much better feature and we will come back with that and see how everyone likes it. Quote
