The six stages of DS investing...

Complacency - I could be slowing building my inventory of 10188s but they take up a lot of space and I don't have the money to tie up.

Panic - Oh crap 10188 is showing sold out! Lube up the CC, Ima' get 'em while they're hot!

Denial - Listen, it's not coming back, 'Sold Out' is just a place holder until they mark it retired. It's like the exact same thing with different letters.

Anger - WTF do they mean they're making more?? It's retired! I'm taking this s**t back!

Depression - Lego investing really sucks, there's no big money anymore and what little I can make is gonna disappear when this bubble pops.

Acceptance - I'm actually happy I got these 10188s. I can make some space at the bottom of my bed and just skip lunch for the next few months

Perfect, except that after #5, you're supposed to loop back to #2 a few times before moving on to #6. It's sort of like Chutes & Ladders.

I think for every production run I am going to return 2 of the 10, I recently ordered. Tieing up such a large chunk of money going into the holiday season seems like poor use of capital.

I may regret this but I feel like stocking up on any of the smaller star wars sets is going to be more lucrative leading up to the holidays.

Either way, I'm going to be carefully watching stock levels ready to bail at any signs of a flood.

I'm starting to get this feeling that this thing really won't ever die.  I honestly, at this point, wouldn't be surprised that the rumors of a new DS is just a model like set like DSII, and it won't actually be meant to replace 10188.  We shall see though.

I'm saying it's going to be staying for a while longer.  I mean why not?  Lego obviously isn't losing any money continually producing it.

Sales and prices on Bricklink are strong which I find very interesting.  Maybe this is a sign of collectors/builders finally scrambling to acquire this set before the price skyrockets and the supply just isn't there to keep the price down?  Appreciation doesn't usually take off this quickly on Bricklink.  It's usually Amazon first, eBay a few weeks or months later, and then Bricklink a few months after that (depending on the set, of course).  This set is exhibiting unusual behavior compared to other sets that are on the brink of retirement (R5 and PS, for example).  I also don't recall other sets doing this last year (SSD, R2 and HH were more of a gradual climb...TH too).

Lowest in the US is $550 (New).  That's a 38% increase from MSRP.  Something to keep an eye on.

there are 3 absolutes in life.  the vodka, death, and taxes.

10188's days are numbered.  i don't know if a direct refresh is coming or more individual sets like the latest Throne Room.  Lego will capitalized on the new SW movies with another Death Star.

This doesn't have to be an absolute either though.  Lego could very easily carry 2 death stars for two different purposes. It's not the most unlikely scenario.  If it's done, then hey, no big deal.

Does anyone care to wager a guess whether the orders placed during yesterday's two hour open period get fulfilled? Like I said I don't have any yet and I placed my first order. I'd like to have one for the collection, but it won't be the end of the world if the order gets cancelled.

OH it will get filled don't you worry.  Jorgen is sitting in his golden throne room laughing at all of us. He is just printing cash right now

i think it's a great chance.  ...especially with the web site stating still about making more sets.  it wasn't like that last year with the 10228 haunted house when lego canceled orders made throughout sept (and fulfilled some).

I was still coming out of my dark age last summer and totally by chance just happened to order my first grand emporium and a haunted house a day or two before the 10228 sold out. The GE order of course got fulfilled but the HH order got cancelled. A month later the same exact thing happened with the dang Town Hall.

There's so many cool sets, but when you've only got $600-$800 a month to throw down on LEGO it's hard to pick up everything you want.

$600-$800 a month to use on lego isnt so bad. I think thats actually pretty good.

I got an email saying the DS I ordered was out of stock and would be a little longer before shipment.
