Jais I think your comments are well said.  I have no idea where 10188 will go probably not $2,000 any time soon if there is another one maybe not ever.  that being said I think people that say you can't make money unless you sell it for $650 are wrong.  I am holding mine medium or long term but I have a friend that went out and bought a bunch last week at a healthy discount and is almost done selling them all will pickup margin and move on.  eBay is already 1 at 550 then 559 and Amazon is 568.  The set will do fine.

Tell me, plz, what discount we are talking about?

Everyone had 48 hours earlier this week, when it was clear DS was retiring based on LEGO Shop at Home status changes, to buy their fill at MSRP.  If you didn't buy then, why now?  And if you bought your limit, or quota, etc. back then, why has that number increased now that buying more is an F5 scenario?  Have a plan and stick to it!

It's been retiring for years...

Yes, but it wasn't 'temporarily out of stock' and then 'sold out' until this week.  Anyway, everyone knows it's over-hoarded, been out too long, the figures look dated, the build techniques make duplo look sophisticated, and there's a bigger, better, cheaper DS due out any day now.  So really, everyone should be loading up on Exo-Suits ('retiring soon'!) or Mixels series XXXIII.

Sorry...my point was everyone had plenty of time to get virtually any quantity they desired before...years...

Why?

Because No one thought it would be $550-$600 in Three days.

I now know why Lego is the most powerful toy company in the universe.

The Death Star proved to me the power of the 'hoard.' When all of the various online sites go out of stock on a $400 set within in a day, you know it is not mom and pop buying it for little Jimmy.

Once us 'collectors/investors/hoarders/resellers' get any official information from the Lego mothership that a set is going out of print we load up on all and any inventory that is MSRP or less. (for the most part 'nonduds' not included)

Overall it is interesting to watch.

P.S.: also when our wives ask what we are doing with all of these Legos (yes I like the s) just reply... "I am a commodities trader honey."

Just received my Death Star from Target delivered by FedEx.  Received in the Lego shipping box; no 2nd outer box, the shipping label was just attached to the factory Lego shipper box.  I am happy to have received it this way versus them removing the Lego shipper box and placing the set in another box for it to move around and run the risk of getting damaged during shipping.

I really regret not buying a few more of these, especially since I have the Redcard.  Thanks to this site I had the courage to buy 1 this earlier this week before they went out of stock everywhere in the US.  The $400 cost of these was a good reason to hold me back.  I have spent a lot of money the past week with Target & Walmart clearance sales and did not want to tie up more funds.

My Target DS just arrived as well in the Lego shipper - looks great except one of the four seals is not on properly - what would you all do?  Cut open the other seal on that side and check the parts, or just weigh the set?

Oh, and seal codes were 20R5.

Open it up without breaking the seals (hair dryer will help make sure you don't tear the package) and just make sure everything is accounted for inside. Then re-seal. Mind you this is only if you think it's been tampered with. With older items the seals can shift around and shouldn't be a big deal.

However when you go to sell it in the future; i would make sure to describe the item as "Opened to verify contents and re-sealed". At least this is what i do with sketchy sealed boxes. Did it with an R2 i sold recently and it did not affect the price.

1. look closely at the seal is it only one or all four

2. weigh the set. not sure how accurate your scale is but

set only: 18lb 0.3oz

with the lego box: 20lb 5.6oz

3. if the variation is less than 2oz don't worry too much. if variation is about 4oz-5oz then only open the set.  { i don't recommend going through the hair dryer et al crap } most likely someone has already ravaged the set out of darth vader. { that's what has happened most of the time }.

4. if the variation is over 5oz don't even bother opening just return the set. get your $$ back and move on. its not worth the hassle trying to figure out what is missing and how to recover. there are just too many permutation and combination

For me I was too paranoid to tie up funds when retirement could be years. Once it sold out I felt safer grabbing a few. Of course my quota was only 4 plus the one I already had for personal build.

I have same question...damaged seal from Amazon. Was going to return but then they sold out that evening so thinking I should keep...???

I had something similar happen and I said I wanted to exchange it.  They said they didn't have another so offered me 20% off instead.  It was for SO.

thanks...I need to take pics and call Amazon but been too busy. Hoping not too late. Received it Tuesday or Wednesday I think. Can't remember if they have time limit on reporting damage.

how damaged is damaged?

1. look closely at all seals. if its only one don't worry too much. check to see if any finger print smudges are visible in both seals of one side. or its just the seal that has moved. look very closely. if both seal of one side  are questionable then weigh the set.

2. net = 18lb 0.3oz so you should be somewhere there.

3. if the variation is large. just return. not worth the hassle.

did you check the content of the set or weighed it? it may sound like a lot but if not 20%($80.00) is not going to make up for the difference if some major bag is missing in there. or just the manual for that matter. when you are selling this later for $800/$900 and someone returns for missing manual or whatever you are in the hook for 2Xshipping that alone would eat up that 20% break one got.

imagine the damage its going to do to your business if the buyer thought that you are the one who took out and tried to stiff him/her.
