New member here, just wanted to say hello. I love the site so far, there is TONS of information here! From reading my limited posts so far, my scenario seems a bit different from most. My goal is to buy sets as cheap as I can, build them with my son and daughter, then re-sell them used for as close as I can get to the original purchase price. I'm fine paying some money to build a big set, I wouldn't be upset at all paying $10 - $15 for a large set. We'll see how it goes!

The first set that I plan on 'flipping' is The Simpsons House. I just picked it up for $160 on Craigslist. I wouldn't say it's a bargain price or anything, but it seems like resale on ebay for a used set has been around $165. Ebay and Paypal fees will take a good chunk of money, but I'm fine losing some cash since it's all about the build for me. Maybe I can find some trades on this site, but it seems that it's more driven towards new sets that are sealed.

If anyone has suggestions for me, I'd love any ideas!

Welcome, if you just plan on buying as cheaply as possible, building, then selling, may I suggest just getting a bulk lot if you can find a good one. Your buy in would generally be far less than buying sets and you have a better than decent chance of making a little scratch along the way. You also get to build some sets that you wouldn't normaly be able to, I've found some truly outstanding sets in mixed bulk.

Welcome to the Forums!! Definitely a good buy if that Simpson`s House was sealed. You`ll realize pretty quickly if you don`t know already that Lego doesn`t discount Exclusives anymore. The most you`ll get (conventionally anyway) is 10% back with x2VIP and a promo, usually around October. So anything more than that is very good!

Thanks Everyone, nice to meet you all. The Simpsons House that I got on CL for $160 is new, sealed in a box. On paper, it seems that I'll be able to get pretty close to break-even on that one after it's built. That is if the kids don't lose any pieces, or get too attached to it. I saw the buy/sell/trade section on this site, I'll definitely post it after I get it build and ready to move on. From what I gathered on there so far, it seems that people are mostly looking for new/sealed sets.

Thanks again for the advice!

Welcome.  Your plan is sound, you should be able to resell for close to your purchase price.  Try to find sets with box and instructions, as these sell for a premium when you decide to flip.  And, bulk lots can be profitable, too, as well as a lot of fun to figure out which sets, etc. you've got.  Good luck!

Hi again, I just wanted to write up a quick follow up post. I mentioned in this thread, that my main objective was to buy as low as I could, build the sets with my kids, play with them, then re-sell. I just turned my first set, and I wanted to let you all know how I did. I purchased The Mine (4204) at TRU with some raise discounted GCs, $5 back, etc. I sold it yesterday on eBay. With my seller fees, paypal fees, etc, I ended up down just $3.30 total. An awesome turnaround in my book. It was hours of fun, and more importantly, hours of 'quality time' that my kids weren't in front of the TV. This should be fun! Thanks to all the new friends and comments on this site. You guys are great.

Yeah, I'm sticking to my plan, but not solely. Buying sets has been a blast, I've bought some investment sets as well, that I won't build. Nothing huge yet, but I ordered a PS from LEGO Shop at Home for double VIP, and I got 6 x PEE sets. If the PS ships, I'm planning on sitting on it for a while.
