Two of our more popular threads are "What LEGO set(s) did you buy today?" and "What LEGO set(s) did you sell today?" These threads are filled with great information. But we all know LEGO bricks are about "building" LEGO sets and models, so why shouldn't we talk about it on this site as well? I mean, many LEGO sets that are fantastic builds are also investment winners, so why shouldn't people share some of their experiences of build and set quality that might affect LEGO set values, either positively or negatively? Earlier this week it was shot/vacinne day for my son at the doctors, so my wife bribed him with The First Night (21115).

That would be my favorite set from the line's first wave alongside the Crafting Box considering the build itself and the nice variety of all pieces included. The house is decent and does feel rather 'Minecrafty' as it should. Course I enjoy building the Creator houses which this reminded me only with a simpler blocky overtone. I really like getting a bunch of those masonry profile bricks and translucent clear parts.

Finally got the chance to put together the Ecto-1 that I bought with damaged box discount several months ago. I must say this thing was thoroughly enjoyable. it was funny as I was building the first part of the set I didn't realize it was actually the stand for the action figures. This thing is a very fun build and the side windows were especially intriguing as you put them together. It was a nice surprise to realize how they were connected to each other and to the car itself with a slight angle inwards. I'm always impressed with Lego builds and this one is no disappointment. From an investment angle I can easily see paying $100 for this set. This one will be a winner I have no doubt about it. Regardless of its potential inclusion in a hypothetical GB HQ or not

We are building WALL-E right now with my five year-old while listening to the WALL-E soundtrack. So far, so good!

Just finished building the new Millenium Falcon!

It's a great set! Great build, nice minifigs (although these could have been a little bit better), nice exterior, nice interior.

LEGO has been thoughtful enough to leave some imperfections so that advanced builders can enjoy their hobby to the outmost and MOC up the set just a little bit.

If I find the time (and the pieces) I'll improve on the landing support, the hatch, the cockpit, connect cockpit to the ship so that minifigures can actually enter and probably pimp up the interior.

So as you can see this set has got it all! ;-)

the stickers have been a pain... I think I've done a rather good job but I'm very happy to be done with it!

 

 

Finished the Trevi Fountain this morning and this has been my largest Architecture model to date (I've not built the houses or the Imperial hotel). I've built enough of these to know what I was getting into: tiny pieces, repetitive elements, tight spaces but this thing wore on my patience a bit. (turning page) "Wait, I need 6 of THOSE now!?!?" ...and I probably spent 10 minutes getting the horses placed correctly. They kept coming apart though I don't think they could more substantial without ruining the scale.

Overall fun build. I really like the water bits more than I thought I would (the rocks DID get tedious) and the book/instruction is well done.

 Built the new MF and Sea Cow over the weekend!  Haven't built anything for the past month and fingers were itching to build.

i really wanted to be excited about the MF, but it was just 'meh' for me.  Nothing particularly special.  Made me wish for a new 4000+ piece MF.  Didn't think the premium price was worth it.  Much preferred the shuttle tyderium over this. Took me 3 hours.  

On a more positive note, I thoroughly enjoyed building the Sea Cow.  This set was huge and fun.  Very little repetition and nice mini figures.

 

I was building Wall-E over the weekend as well, neck part is really loose and have to go with Chris McVeigh's MOD. It is much better after the MOD, without swinging head. Now I'm waiting for the motor and remote control to modify Wall-E. 

I finally made a display of the HP sets that I picked up last month.  These are the ones that I am keeping (more accurately giving away on an extended loan) and I never knew that you could stack the 4709 castle (or any of series 1) on top of other sets; that is really cool!

I think that the second picture gives you a view of one castle in front of the other to make it appear larger when looking straight on because the roofing tiles line up perfectly.

There are 3 castles, Dumbledore's office, forbidden corridor, Snape's class, Maurader Map, a Buckbeak, and Gringott's Bank in these pictures

 

 

Ferrari F40. Total love-hate relationship with this car...

Love: 1) the ways that Lego designers are able to create angles and shapes is absolutely astonishing. I love when I am building a section that I have no idea where it is headed until I pop it in to place. There are plenty of surprises in this build.

2) the wow factor. I gotta hand it to Lego, they have made another incredible vehicle. I was concerned what having two red cars on the shelf would look like, but the either it is a different shade of red or the red on black just pops differently than the T1 on white. It really stands out and looks beautiful. 

Hate: 1) the stickers. I don't necessarily hate placing stickers on Lego, but these are particular cumbersome because they are so tiny and my fingers completey covered them so I had trouble making sure it was lined up properly. I had to carefully re-lift and place far too many times. These are high-stakes too. If you want straight pinstripes or logos, you better have a steady hand.

2) fragile- I found a way to break it several times during build and my kid and I both found a way to break it after build. It is most definitely a display piece only.

3) lacking "fun" details. The T1 and especially the Mini Cooper raised the bar in regards to the extra factors such as a picnic basket, spare tire, or fan belt on engine kinda stuff. F40 has a sweet engine, but it becomes locked in with the bumper. It can be removed but should not be so tedious to do so. Also the trunk contains a container and some white case or something. Kind of blah. Also the stick to hold up the back car hood would be better attached with a ball joint or something. 

Overall the end result is a really cool display piece. Looks better in person than on the website and box. A great addition to the cars series, as long as you don't fiddle with it too much! I definitely recommend for build and display, but on the fence for investment some day down the road.

Son and I spent 4 days building the Pet Shop.  I never really understood the modular craze, until now.  When I saw the pics that were uploaded for the brick bank, I thought it was time to at least get a pet shop before it went.  So we bought it this month to have at least one in the collection.  This was perhaps the most fun building experience of the many sets that we have done.  The details in this set are just awesome, and this blows away all the architecture sets by a mile.   I guess, we'll be ordering the other 4..  Don't think i'll be going back on the retired versions of this line, but the fire brigade sort of looks fun.

every town needs a fire station...but a town hall?  That is debatable.

Built the Deathstroke set today.  Was really looking forward to getting the Deathstroke minifigure, but it was a little bit of a letdown.  That said, the bat boat is pretty cool, and the Robin minifigure is awesome.  Batman cowl is slick too.  Very satisfied with this one.

Put together the Midieval Market Village set today.  Picked this up with the intention of adding snow to the roof and adding to my winter village.  Set is a lot of fun to put together and I really like the figures.  I understand now why this set is often included as an honorable mention in the top Lego sets of recent memory.  Very cool!

Changing Seasons.  We started with the summer scene.  We'll switch over to Fall next week.  I really like this set for display and investment.  The build for the summer scene had some nice features.  I liked the grill, window sills, awnings, and the mailbox.  Don't miss out on this set.

The first thing I did when I got into LEGO investing was buy a couple of sets that were already retired that I wanted to eventually build.  This included the Fire Brigade and Imperial Flagship.  That decision saved me about $500 in less than a year.

Last night and today's project.  My son has been bugging me for the police dropship since it was released, so we built it last night.  Lots of pieces and a good build overall.

I picked up Indiana Jones 7198 - Fighter Plane Attack last week on EBay.  It was advertised with a bunch of other sets and he just had a blanket statement in his listings that all sets listed at 97%-99% complete.  I noticed it had all the minifigs and most of the accessories.  The planes were disassembled, but I took a risk.  They ended up 100% complete with the extra pieces and very clean.  A real nice condition box was also included.  All for $60 shipped.

Pretty amazing, in just a few weeks I have all the Indiana Jones sets but a few.  I'm only missing 2-3 now I think.  Time to take inventory before I complete the set.

Decided to try some of the Architecture series lately (White House, Big Ben) and today built Falling Water.  Build was fun though a little repetitive but I didn't mind.  Finished model looks fantastic and they way the building comes apart is a very cool feature.  I live near a Frank Lloyd Wright building (Marin County Civic Center) and have spent many hours there so it was fun to put together one of his creations.  Looking forward to more of the Architecture series....

Finished up my Bat-Pod tonight, but I messed up and ordered wrong on 2 pieces.  Guess which ones?  I now have another Bricklink order in.

 

Finished the Bricktober sets from 2015 today with the TRU store.  I am really surprised at the size difference between these and last year's sets but I much prefer the size of this year.  I feel like the 2015 builds were more complex and used nicer bricks and in better colors.  I took some photos of size for comparison.  My favorite is the trains stain mostly because of the colors with the TRU store a very close second.

I messed up and somehow ordered these in black, rather than dark bluish gray.  You can see them, they stick out like a sore thumb.

I agree these new sets look much better than last years. I actually want some of them for personal collection this year, last years not so much.
