Lisvane Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 Hi All, I'm a new member from Cardiff, Wales. I recently joined brickpicker.com as i'm after some advice. I've collected LEGO for a good 6 years in my childhood (i'm now 17) and aquired a total of about 25 sets. Most of which were LEGO Star Wars with some other bits and bobs. The most valuable model of my collection is the 10189 Taj Mahal, which i gather is now worth alot more than i originally bought it for! What i was wondering was, should i sell-up my LEGO now, or wait? Will it increase in value over time? Is there a peak time to sell? Who/Where should i sell it? As you can probably tell i have no real idea when it comes to selling LEGO, so any advice would be great. Thanks in advance Quote
brickelements Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 You ask a simple but complicated question. It all depends. While that could be construed as a cop-out of an answer I assure you it is not. If you want to obtain maximum value out of your collection then you can wait...over time many sought after sets will continue to appreciate in value as more people buy lego and want older sets. However it is not that simple. At some will point out many sets will reach an apex in terms of their financial returns. What does that mean? Take your example of Taj Mahal. It has (my opinion only) gone past its apex of returns. You can achieve better returns if sold now and new sought after sets were purchased (my experiencedd opinion) and held long enough to appreciate (at a generally faster rate than a long retired set will). To me this means: more than likely you can sell it now (for far more than you paid, if you paid MSRP or less) and take that money and to buy new stock and start the appreciation game anew. If you do not need the money or still appreciate the set then selling may not be your best option. The depends part of my statement refers to what you want to do going forward. Reinvest acquired money to buy more lego or cash out for other needs. It is up to each individual to decide what suits them best. For me personally (since I have never built it) I would build it, enjoy it and when I got tired of it I would sell and purchase new sets to appreciate both esthetically and financially. Just my wandering 2 cents. 1 Quote
speedsausage Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Welcome Lisvane! Pretty much what Brickelement posted. I'm pretty new at this too but from what I've read/asked in the forums, which I recommend you do, on the whole the majority of sets hit a plateau. Really you need to decide for yourself what you want to achieve and go from there. Good luck! Quote
Lisvane Posted January 1, 2015 Author Posted January 1, 2015 Thanks for the welcomes and advice. I think, after taking in to account the advice and info from other blogs and forums, i think i'm going to sell-up. Judging on some of the recent selling-price information, it looks like many of my sets haven't increased in price recently and arn't expected to increase in the future, so selling up looks like the best option for me. Thanks once again for your hep and advice Quote
