MartinP Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 I wish I could give a Thumbs down to the early openings like that, not the post but what the retailers are doing creeping earlier every year. I would rather the employees be able to catch a break with their family than navigate fights and brawls over $4 blurays. But hey I am old school. I agree. Going to shop for Black Friday on Thanksgiving is just wrong. I liked it when the stores opened earlier on BF like 4-6 a.m., which is earlier than the standard hours. I really don't like the feeling of knowing that people are shopping at the exact same time that I'm eating my Thanksgiving meal. 1 Quote

Agree with you to a certain extent but at the same time to each their own. Some people are not able to be with their families on Thanksgiving and if they want to go shopping then have at it. I'm more concerned about the store workers. I hope that all these workers are working on a volunteer basis and are receiving some kind of holiday pay. I really don't like the idea of someone forced to work on Thanksgiving and missing time with their family. Quote

As a 20 year veteran of big box retail, the best way that you can give a "thumbs down" is to simply not show up. Every year I would have at least a dozen people make a comment along those lines and my response was always "go the f$&@ home", or maybe something less dramatic. Point is, if you're sick of stores opening ever earlier on Thanksgiving or staying open later on Memorial Day, Forth of July, Labor Day, Any Other Day vote with you wallet and just don't go. Refusing to work a Holliday or Black Friday will get you fired from just about every major retailer. Quote

FWIW I do not go shopping on Thanksgiving. I think the whole thing is sad. I am great with stores up opening up at 4am on Friday and standing in line just not on Thanksgiving itself. Are you still in retail? Do you see it getting worse every year or starting to level off on how early they go? Quote

Do you see it getting worse every year or starting to level off on how early they go? I quit three weeks after I hit my 20, ok "technically" I'm on leave, but I have no plans on going back, just keeping my discount as long as possible. It, without question, gets worse every year. My first Black Friday (1994) Target opened at 6am on Friday. Last year (my last) I think they opened around 9pm Thanksgiving day. Honestly, retail is like a fungus. Once it gets under your skin it's hard to get rid of. I started as a cart attendant/hardlines and worked my way up to management while letting them pay for school. Then about 8-9 years ago started using my degree and went backwards down the retail food chain (I stayed for the free shipping supplies). Eventually "Black Friday" will be "Black Thursday" as most national retailers will open early am on Thanksgiving Day. All because people show up. Quote
