pickleboy
Ebay is spinning off Paypal. They will no longer be one company...http://finance.yahoo.com/news/paypal-and-ebay-split-132256484.html I know it's speculative but do you think this will bring changes? Good or bad? Migration
My super sensitive psychic senses tell me that this will bring higher fees. Edited September 30, 2014 by Migration
tonysbricks
My super sensitive psycic senses tell me that this will bring higher fees. I think it will have the opposite effect. No longer having a chokehold on ebay traffic means they will have to compete on an open market. Hopefully, anyway.
Migration
I think it will have the opposite effect. No longer having a chokehold on ebay traffic means they will have to compete on an open market. Hopefully, anyway. My guess is that they will have some sort of non compete set up where they still provide for eBay for x number of years. Both sides will need to raise fees to pay all the consultants, lawyers, specialists involved with the split.
biking_tiger
How do Paypal fees compare to Skrill and other online payment options? In the long run, they'll have to be competitive. This would be a long-term win for customers (both buyers and sellers)... wouldn't it?
chinothegeeko
Higher fees on both ends. Ebay is gonna have to really compete now as paypal was its big moneymaker. This is a good time for a new platform to come in with some real competition. Paypal now has their hands with apple pay, square, alibaba, etcc
biking_tiger
Higher fees on both ends. For Skrill, or is this a prediction for eBay and Paypal? I can't imagine higher fees because--as you say--competition. Competition lowers prices.
mscheaf
For skrill the buyer pays the fees. Also you don't have to use PayPal for eBay. You never had too. Ever
mscheaf
EBay had always accepted other payment methods. Since the beginning.

Competition lowers prices. I meant for paypal and ebay. Don't know too much about skrill. I'm sure it will be even more confusing how they calculate fees or they will raise the low end fee percentage of receiving amount less than $20 to 3.2% plus 0.30. Just an example as I really have no clue. But things like this are rarely good for sellers. Hopefully things work out for us sellers once. biking_tiger
Or avoiding anti-trust lawsuits down the road? Just a thought, but I've always questioned eBay/Paypal eating breakfast at the same table. I know eBay always accepted alternate forms of payment, but nobody really pushed the others. Why should they? Another question: how will this impact Paypal's new 180 day item not received/item not as described policy? Was the new policy put in place as a precursor to the split? asharerin
Very good move to unlock value for shareholders. Ebay traffic is declining considerably and on its own does not make much money. Paypal was the breadwinner in this relationship but Ebay was dead weight for shareholders. This will mean ebay will likely open up its platform to alot more payment processors. Stripe was rated the number one processor for 2014 so ebay would be foolish not to integrate it. Also apple pay will be a dominant player in 1-2 years so ebay will have to take them onboard. If Jack Ma introduces a platform in the USA and keeps it free for a number of years (as is his MO) ebay will decline alot faster than it already is under John Donahoe. No doubt they see the writing on the wall. Let's not forget google as a possible buyer for ebay after the split. In 5 years ebay will be like overstock is today.

If Google buys eBay, wouldn't eBay be forced to use Google Wallet ?
asharerin
If Google buys eBay, wouldn't eBay be forced to use Google Wallet ? No google wallet was a complete failure. Google would make huge $$$ promoting ebay listings in google search results.

I hope you are right about GW. I wonder if the whole Panda update debacle earlier this year was some kind of strong arm tactics by Google to pin eBay down. 10230
Google would make huge $$$ promoting ebay listings in google search results. It already does. Just search for something for "shopping" and you get tons of eBay listings.
asharerin
Looks like J.D. will be fired in 2015. Good riddance. Although I think the damage he did to the brand is irreparable.
