Hey guys,

on the supposed retirement of the SSD and R2D2:

Top Quizzzzz:

Why would LEGO offer a special Star Wars May 4th promotion on these sets when they've got none left in stock?

(A: because many more are on the way)

Why would R2D2 be EoL soon when in fact it's still pictured in the June folder?

(A: because that's what 99% of rumours are: garbage)

I think both sets will be in the shelves longer.

Sure there's going to be a retirement of an exclusive set, but my best guess is... it's not going to be SSD nor DS, nor R2...

And then the final question is...

What will be retired???

(A:... a bad selling airship maybe?)

PS: this said, if you have the space, having some stacked for the "eventual event" isn't a bad thing.

Great, dont't buy any as you have time, right? Most folks are not going to drum up 4-8k on the spot for these at the last minute anyway. It is not an option right now.so best of luck. LEGO will fill their back orders and then it is done. I will be happy to sell to those who don't have any right now, or they can go to TRU.

Who said the exclusives will be discounted?  Who said that the R2-D2 will retire soon?  What set are you referring to as a bad seller?

Temporarily out of Stock = Re-start the Production lines boys.

i have a gut feeling we will be seeing 10221 at least one more time.  why?  i have no idea but i'm keep trying to grasp (and can't ) why lego would not have enough of their largest  UCS set heading into May the 4th weekend.  their sales staff have to know that retirement rumors always move inventory even initial slow selling  ones like last year's 10227 B-Wing.

...unless they just totally bombed sale projections of 10221 heading into 2x VIP month,

Why?  Maybe a bunch of smart and savvy LEGO investors and resellers figured out the end was near and bought up more 10221s than LEGO had estimated would be sold.  It is a high end set, probably not too mass produced or easily reproduced to make more up, so they ran out a couple days early.  Oh well...

Hello

On the 'quizzzzzzzzzzzzz'

1/ Discount on exclusives are "harder to get" but are still out very well -there-.

have a look here:

http://www.toysrus.fr/family/index.jsp?categoryId=4070781

2/ The "May 4th SW sale" was pre-announced by multiple Lego fan sites. The Brick Show, BrickSet, HothBricks etc said the same. This was the commercial intent of LEGO - makes sense as it boosts their sales

3/ Some sites also announced the EoL of SSD and R2D2. What I don't understand is why Lego.com would do that in the middle of an action like the current one?

  • Give people a "last chance" to get one ?
  • Being obliged to answer many order when in fact there's little stock left? Maybe cancelling stuff - what about customer service?
  • My best guess is that by the end of this year, some of these sets will have disappeared. But it will take some time - the SSD and DS are out of stock everywhere. Has LEGO dramatically underestimated demand? I doubt that.

=> http://www.hothbricks.com/2014/04/retiring-soon-les-sets-10221-10225-bientot-en-rupture-definitive/

4/ The http://shop.lego.com/fr-BE/Red-Five-X-wing-Starfighter-10240 gets a lot of bad press. Part out value is not worth it. If I were Lego, I'd stop producing the less popular stuff.

Obviously on raw sales data, I haven't done my homework yet. Maybe somebody else has a better view on what ships / SW sets a selling well/ which ones not.

regards

10221 is def not mass produced as you stated.  it's been sold-out for weeks now on lego.com  maybe they will let people order more starting May 3rd.

Any takers on when Ed gets the details and is allowed to post the fine print about the sets and discount percentages, SSD or not, etc in Saturday's sale?

I am thinking Friday at 7pm EST.  Care to speculate? :)

Many people already have the list but are sworn to secrecy until the "given" moment they are allowed to tell.  LEGO will pimp slap anyone who spills the beans.  I'd tell you how I know this but I don't like getting pimp slapped.

That Hoth Bricks article is pure speculation that essentially says SSD and R2D2 will be retiring because they are disappearing from the Lego catalogue according to American sources. Of which it doesn't mention a single source.

Blah, blah, blah. More rumours... We've got plenty of those around here (oh and we have rumors here too for my friends down south :)).

My guess is BrickPicker is one of the main referenced sites.  I agree it is speculation.  But I agree, I think Ed and all are right in the speculation, it will come back to fill orders and be gone in 60 days or less.

I agree.  I wondered though because Ed said as soon as he has it, he will get it to us.  Maybe has asked someone to hold sending it to him. Or its in a virtual lock box he has! :)  That being said, what timing thoughts do you have of when the official OK to publish date/time is?

The only discounts on the large exclusives as of late were the LEGO S@H of the past week for non-US countries.  We still do not know for sure what the discount will be in the US, but from what I hear, they won't be on exclusives.

2/ The "May 4th SW sale" was pre-announced by multiple Lego fan sites. The Brick Show, BrickSet, HothBricks etc said the same. This was the commercial intent of LEGO - makes sense as it boosts their sales

Just because an item is pictured in an ad or catalog, doesn't mean it will be available.

3/ Some sites also announced the EoL of SSD and R2D2. What I don't understand is why Lego.com would do that in the middle of an action like the current one?

Retirement dates are most likely internally approximated by LEGO due to inventory.  Customers never have a real clue when a set will sell out for good.  A "retiring soon" notation on a set on LEGO S@H means a set can sell out in one week or 6 months.

4/ The http://shop.lego.com/fr-BE/Red-Five-X-wing-Starfighter-10240 gets a lot of bad press. Part out value is not worth it. If I were Lego, I'd stop producing the less popular stuff.

Only LEGO has that data.  For all we know it could be one of their best selling sets.

LEGO does not release the sales information, the company that runs the LEGO affiliate program does.  Non-US data was released a day or two ahead of the sale so that websites can post it.  I'm figuring sometime tonight or at the latest, early tomorrow.  My source has indicated the exclusives will not be on sale in the US.  My source was correct last year.

This thread is such an entertaining read when you do not have a horse in the race :)  That's right, I am not buying it unless it is discounted 15% or more this weekend.  Even then I am only in for 1. My money is tied up in umm other things ;)

So there, 1 less SSD hunter for you :D
