Crustybeaver Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 I wonder if R2-D2 in the movies was actually speaking english in every scene and all we heard was bleeps because he said nothing but curse words. Maybe he had Tourettes Quote
Follows Closely Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 I love this set, but I am not sold on how it will perform short term (<2 years) Quote
Sauromosis Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 (edited) Ed Mack: Lookie, lookie here...This thread is dead. So many sets to retire and so little time... Willy Wonka: The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last! Great reference...recently watched the Tim Burton version and I liked it a lot more than I did the first time. Then happened to catch an interview with a very old Gene Wilder who said it was terrible what they did in that remake as if the first one was sacred. Edited November 11, 2014 by sauromosis 1 Quote

Burton hasn't done a good movie in a decade. Quote
sroster Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 C'mon mscheaf, even these guys think you are too negative! 1 Quote
zskid00 Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Ever built and displayed it? Then you would be sold. Yeah, building it is what sold me on this set. It looks great on display. Quote
mscheaf Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 C'mon mscheaf, even these guys think you are too negative! Yes I am too negative because Tim Burton makes sh**ty movies. Got it. 1 Quote
Follows Closely Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 ^ Yes to both. My wife even complemented the set, which is a rare occurrence. The pictures on the box don't serve the set justice methinks. I only secured 1/3 the stock I was planning on getting, maybe that is subliminally bringing me down. It will be interesting to see where the price goes in the next few weeks. I predict a slow climb, not HH or eveb GE climbs for R2. Quote
johnwray Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 I saw Chopper's minifig at Target the other day and learned that his real name is: C1-10P. Anyone notice anything unusual about that? Looooook clooooooser... Quote
Ed Mack Posted November 11, 2014 Author Posted November 11, 2014 Yep, me. I like R2 the robot from the movies. Lights, Bleeps and bloops, sarcastic personality etc. This is just a nice looking Lego model. Next year at this time there will be a fancy little R2 toy that will make all of the bleeps and bloops, light up and probably be half the price that this set will be going for on the after market. Personally I'd rather spend the money on the little R2 toy that better represents the character from the movie. Wow...I could not disagree more. Sorry. 5 Quote

Sauromosis Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 This must be Ed's crowning achievement...he goes all-in on Star Wars Lego sets years ago, accumulates a ton, then builds an army of underlings that wipe out inventory from all retailers as these big retirements come such as SSD and R2D2 (not to mention the modulars). Is Ed Luke Skywalker or Palpatine? 1 Quote

Seems like there will be a lot of people with hurt feelings once again because they didn't acquire this set, assuming it was going to last until the new STAR WARS movies came out. They will pick the set apart, complaining that it doesn't beep or light up, or that it doesn't move with a motor and remote control, or some other silly reason. I guess the 10179 Falcon is a loser because it doesn't have a working hyperdrive. 6 Quote
mscheaf Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 R2 is a lovely set. If it really is retiring I am sad. I only have 3. I was wanting 10 of these before eol. Dang it horde! I know I am far from an expert but this is a winner. How can it not be? Quote

Is Ed Luke Skywalker or Palpatine? I have told people for months that there are major sets on the chopping block...and there still are. I try not to start a buying frenzy until the signs are obvious. I am indeed lucky that there will be new STAR WARS movies. A lot of my old stash is appreciating once again. Quote

If that statement isn't final confirmation, I don't know what is. Ed helped steer me to buy a SSD, HH and TH. Now this. What more can you ask of him? Stop hesitating. Quote

naf Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 I don't understand people saying that this doens't have potential, both short and long term. The set has already jumped in price and it hasn't even been sold out for 24 hours. As with most Lego sets, you really need to see it built in person to appreciate it. It's a decent sized build, interactive with the various arms, rotating head, and retractible leg. It's possible to mod it with power functions. It's easy to display, this guy doens't take up that much room on a shelf. After the SSD was done, I started focusing my funds on R2, and I'm glad I did. Snagged a couple more yesterday for good measure. From the looks of it, this set could be gone well before this time next year, which will make this set a big box of plastic gold due to the new movie. Quote
Grynn Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 There's no earthly way of knowing / Which direction we are going / There's no knowing where we're rowing / Or which way the river's flowing / Is it raining? / Is it snowing? / Is a hurricane a-blowing? / Not a speck of light is showing / So the danger must be growing / Are the fires of hell a-glowing? / Is the grisly reaper mowing? / Yes, the danger must be growing / 'Cause the rowers keep on rowing / And they're certainly not showing / Any signs that they are slowing! 1 Quote
