Not generating the number of sales in Europe on BL or Ebay so far to warrant a rapid appreciation. Seems this one will have more on common with ToO than the brick colour.

I never expected The Tumbler to appreciate so explosively like the Red5 and have since the beginning felt that it would gradually appreciate very similar to ToO. Both are iconic sets within their themes. Both have unique parts that can't be found in any other set. And both will very likely never be remade. And unlike 10240 these two sets are not surfing on a (movie) hype but will do well over time. They just need patience, which is sometimes in short supply with certain people here. ;)

I wonder what happens when this thing is completely wiped out in the retail market. There are two camps as I can see. One camp of non-believers that the Tumbler will not rise. Argument is that this isn't the batmobile, this is costly, this isn't an iconic set, this only lasted through 2 movie. The other camp says short lifespan, big set, lots of rare pieces. etc....

Would be nice to have a poll to see what the predictions are for the price of this in July 2016. Some will be caught off guard.

A lot of people forgot that when this came out, it went to around $500 or near it, then oos. Now that it has only been out for a year and a bit, it goes sold out at SAH. Then retirement.

I don't think this can be compared to the AA. The AA is more of a playset than a display set.

When this came out, even when oos it was going for max 350 shipped on eBay

This set is a winner, and people's laughable impatience and jumping at any minute data point to make long term assumptions is consistently hilarious.

Almost as hilarious as using examples from the market 10 years ago.

I think you have hit the nail on the head - the hype surrounding this set and huge interest in the beginning seems to have waned (excuse the pun) since then. I have seen enough signs of that recently to make me think this set will have a good return but not great. We can check back in a year and see what has changed.

I'm not worried about my 5. I got them all for good discounts. I wouldn't touch these at msrp

You're doing it the right way, but i think there's plenty of meat on the bone even at full retail. Especially when your hold time has been reduced significantly by knowing its done.

I guess the question is, would you rather have bought a Grand Emporium at 20% off in 2013, or at full retail in 2015 if you're selling in 2016 for the same end price?

Probably more pertinent if you're trying to sell on the way up, vs waiting out the quick flippers.

In Ireland and the UK Smyths toy store regularly did 20% off on this set and S1, DS, SC, PS, SH. KEM ...........

Yeah I knew Europe had easier ways to get these cheap but in the USA (which the original comment was from) the only "discounts" you really see are with rewards points.

I think in Europe we are "luckier" in that many shops are able to discount exclusives - Tumbler could have been had for 150 euros or so ina few places earlier this year. At worse, consider buying in double VIP or with a freebie included and you´d have at least 10% off.

I was hoping there wouldn´t be so many of these out there with resellers but looks like I was wrong. The lack of a big post EOL bump in europe would tend to suggest people got their number.

Really? That may as well have been a 100 years ago. Different times my friend.

Really?  I guess so.  Back then, people would have the patience to sit on a set for a few years and see what develops before making asinine comments.  Today, this site is filled with impatient children crying about sets that don't appreciate before they are retired.  That's the difference.

Perhaps there is, but the way margins have been shrinking, the reward is not quite worth the risk it used to be.

Am I missing something about discounts? Aside from Target's 15% the other month how are you getting discounts on exclusives?

I have used TRU rewards, discount gift cards, VIP points, Discover rewards, Ebay bucks, chase rewards, etc. I know some people will say that doesn't count because I bought other stuff to get those rewards or points, but I find that logic to be dumb. There are many many ways and it's easy if your target number is 5-10. It's probably a lot harder to get 100 Tumblers at 20% off or more. I will probably never know as there are no climate controlled storage units in my area except a roach infested nasty Uhaul place so I will always be constrained by my house size.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.  If this site was around back then, the conversation about the 10179 would have went like this;;;

  • "Oh, the 10179 was discounted $100.00.  Must be a bad seller!"
  • "It's been available for months on Amazon after it's sold out on LEGO Shop at Home.  It will perform poorly.  A giant loser!"
  • "It's too big.  It's too hard to store!"
  • "There are just too many grey bricks.  Boring!"
  • "It has no playability.  It doesn't move.  It's just not fun."
  • "$500!?!?...Are you kidding me?  I could buy 50 sets for that!"
  • "STAR WARS?  Been there, done that."

A long time ago I said on this very same forum that people are trying to make themselves to believe that they are making a good decision by doing whatever. By saying all of these they are attempting to make their doubts to disappear by seeking support on their comments.

Cognitive dissonance, just gotta love it seeing it at work. This forum is a prime example.
