Site Improvements & General FAQs

Don't give me feedback on the home page loading, but please let me know if your regular page/topic/thread browsing is any better now.

Well after a considerable amount of going back & forth on the site, each page has been consistently loading at a brisk pace (roughly three seconds all around I think). I had a couple spots the other day where it seemed to go slow again but nothing odd yesterday or so far today. Pages with videos or lots of images may take a bit to completely load but at least the page itself still comes up in a snap now.

Well I am happy that it improved for you.  They have a new caching technique in here to keep a lot of the load of the DB and web server. That is fine in theory, but it does hurt other areas of the site like the widgets on the main forum page and the widget I had at the bottom.  It looks like the one that was at the bottom of all threads caused much of the delay as it wanted to update alot so you would hit it during an update and the page would not want to render until its done.  This has been an on going discussion with the developers for about two months now. For now, I have just removed that bottom widget until some new update happens that might make that better for everyone.

I'm not sure if this is where this belongs, hopefully a mod will relocate it if need be...on the app in the TRUTH forum I go from post #153-161...I only noticed because without the missing posts, it makes no sense...On the desktop, it has the missing posts...Is it just me?

I just checked on my phone and they show up for me. There isn't anything special about them so not sure why you can't see them.

I have a question and a comment:

My comment is that I suggest that we have a new "Daily deals thread post" every 2 weeks (Aug 1-15, Aug 16-31, Sept 1-15, Sept 16-30, etc).  It might keep things cleaner when it gets busy especially if someone is looking for an older post.  An added benefit is that the mods don't have to go through old posts to "clean the thread up" because the number of posts are still manageable over 2 weeks (approximately 500 posts from July 10-24).

My question is does Jeff know that the timing is still off on the "latest posts" as many show the latest post being less than one second ago.

Keep up the good work.

Cheers!

Breaking up the daily deals every two weeks will just do what the previous setup did and remove all the people that want to get emails on the current deals of the day.  Right now, the daily deals is working out really well in my opinion.  It is keeping on topic pretty well and I don't think the mods are needing to go back and clean up posts.  I am not sure how many people go back days and days.

The timing on the posts is off due to the caching setup that the forum has.  It holds the data a bit so that it does need to query the content on every page load. It's built into the system.

Hey Jeff, there seems to be some issue with the Amazon.co.uk discounts, a few of the discount % seem way off. For example Volvo Front Loader 42030 is showing as a 60% discount even though it's £129.99, compared to an RRP of £169.99, so about a 23% discount.

The Umbran Mobile Heavy Cannon is showing as 49% discount, even though the price is showing as £49.99, which is the RRP. There's a few other examples as well if you need them.

  • 2 weeks later...

Last year you guys were inviting members to write articles for the site.  I haven't seen you guys advertise for that in quite some time.

Are you still interested?  I have an idea that I'm starting to get off the ground, but I'd just as much write it as an ongoing post in the General Selling Forums as I would having a column up on the site.  Just curious before I start writing.

We are always interested in new content. You and anyone else who is interested can PM us with any ideas.

Like Ed said, if you are someone that likes to write a blog from time to time, or if you are interested in blogging LEGO news on a daily basis, please feel free to contact us.  We had to make a decision for a while on what we were going to work on and a lot of our time got sucked up into the book and other projects.

That's what I figured happened. I will PM you with some info.

Am I the only one having double post issues?  I know there have been issues in the past with double posts on the app, but 50% of my posts have been getting doubled up through desktop.  I'm sure I'm not double-clicking.  I notice the issue normally happens when it takes a little long for the post to go through.

On a related side note, any chance we can get delete rights (within the first few minutes, or so)?

Double posts have been happening with a lot of people... The mobile app doesn't seem to suffer from that issue anymore - I agree it seems like it's just the desktop. Jeff has submitted the issue to the forum devs.

And the answer to deleting your own posts has always been no. I know, I know... you won't abuse it, but somewhere someone will. Don't worry, we delete them when we find them but we can only do it from the desktop version right now (so it might not always seem like they are getting deleted). I'm hoping the new mobile app will allow us to do that again.

I strongly dislike the merge "feature" (for lack of a better word). I understand that I'm probably alone in this.

There is a time frame associated with it... I think it's 15 minutes. It's a neat feature to stop people who quote/reply, quote/reply, quote/reply but it does make the double post problem somewhat funny. :)

PS You needn't "delete" the double post, we'll get rid of them as we find them.

** edit .. did not double post on purpose, but will leave it for the laugh it provides. **

I understand why you might dislike it, but if you use it correctly, it really helps tidy things up and keep the flow of the thread going better instead of 3 posts in a row by the same person.

What am I doing wrong with inserting pics from photobucket?  If i use the link button, copy and paste the image link, why is there a link vs an actual picture that comes in the post?

Thanks

You can't embed a picture by just posting a URL... You can do it with a youtube video, the software will convert the URL into something it can embed directly in the post, but the software doesn't work that way for photos. Why you may ask? Well, it has it's own gallery feature I imagine would be the answer...

For images, you have two options:

1) Use the "Drag files here to attach or choose files" option at the bottom of the edit field you type a reply in.
2) Use the Albums feature under your profile (it comes up as "Gallery images" in posts). If you upload an image to an album, in theory you can past a link to the image in a post and the software will understand how to post the image itself.

Personally, I do method #1 so I won't be much help for method #2 but many here do.
