Site Improvements & General FAQs

Yep you guys beat me to it.  Any new member or any time you re login again, it will pick up your country by IP and then you will see a flag in your profile.  I know this will help members talk to one another.  Sometimes you may not realize the person isn't from the US or Europe, etc.   This will help the community more by making a topic more relative to other members.  If the country is not correct, you can update it in your My Settings area.

If we find countries that are not being identified, we will add them as we go along.  I am sure many of the main ones will be there.

Yup, just tried it and it works. It's put in the "correct" country, but not the one I am from :P

More seriously, is there a way to switch off the last remembered place in a thread? Take this one for an example. I tend to follow most of it by email unless I have something to say. So when I clicked on the go to last post button, it took me back to the 29th June! It's also frustrating because I access this site on 4 different devices I end up shooting all over the place. Is there a way to make the latest posted link take you to the latest post?

Then if I want to backtrack I can.

From my understanding of how it works.

If you click the icon beside post it goes to last one they read, if they had not read any it goes to first.
If you click the time posted it goes to very last post no matter what.
If you click title it goes to first post

Hopefully that helps.

Thanks Jeff, I'll do some experimentation. I had not tried clicking on the date. On an iPad sometimes it's not easy to see what is a separate link. Cough...need an app... Cough :P

However one thing it definitely does. I read your answer from my email notification. There it, always goes to the last post I have read, which is not necessarily related to the post on the email link on which I have just clicked. If that makes sense.

Hi Jeff,

Back on my work desktop PC.

Please see attached Word Doc.

I have found the go to "last post" link but the attachment does show a lack on consistency depending on where on the screen you click to enter a thread.

Also, when entering a thread from an email notification it always goes to the "last read post" not the post to which that email is linked.

Hope this helps. :)

Just a suggestion I have for the notification bar for messages and notifications at the top of the page. I was wondering if it could be displayed on the home page too because I am only able to access the notification bar on the forum or blog pages. Thanks guys keep up the good work

How about something similar to BrickLists? I know that something like that would help me write articles faster, an initiative could be BrickPoints, as usual.

Also 30242-1: REPUBLIC FRIGATE shows up as 0 pieces instead of 54.

I don't understand what Bricklists does and how does it benefit the site.

Just PM me or send an email to [email protected] if you want to tell me about sets missing info. I don't want to fill this thread up with these types of requests.  I know there are plenty of blanks to fill in.

Bricklists is exactly what it sounds like: a list for bricks/sets  :D. The point of it is to have more specific lists of LEGO sets, for example, a list of all the polybags, or a list of UCS models. I think that this would be a good addtion, because currently the set database will only specify into year and theme, and sort into price, pieces, and year.

I have used Bricklists in the past to find lists of polybags for certain years, SW remakes, etc. Brickset doesn't have a huge variety of Bricklists, which is why I wouldn't mind something similar on BrickPicker.

I have noticed that some people on Brickpicker are members and others are moderators. What are moderators and how do people become a moderator?

I did a quick search on what a moderator is:

A forum moderator oversees the communication activity of an Internet forum. He monitors the interchange of contributors and makes decisions regarding content and the direction of threads. Moving discussions from one section to another to keep topics organized is also a common job for a forum moderator.

If the tone of a forum becomes hostile or starts to move in the direction of personal attacks, the forum moderator usually has the discretion to lock the discussion to prevent heated, interchanges. He may also be able to hide discussions he deems unworthy of further discussion. Conversely, topics he feels deserve further examination can be posted indefinitely by the moderator even if they garner no comments.

Moderator duties are as diverse as the forum topics themselves. Some moderators are virtually invisible; they surface only when situations arise that do not seem likely to resolve themselves. Other forum moderators are always there, ready to intercede at the smallest hint of discourse. Public forum moderators often have to enforce many rules of conduct and decorum, as public contributors tend to communicate without abandon, which can sometimes upset other commenters.

Private forums linked to a website or group often operate a bit differently. The forum moderator is likely to be familiar with the members, and may be more lax in enforcing rules if he is aware of bantering members and their tones. Standards differ greatly in forums, and newcomers are advised to post with caution until they get the general feel of the forum's atmosphere. Regardless of the forum topic or ambiance, most prohibit the exchange of illegal or copyrighted materials and pornography and many shun swearing or using inappropriate language or images.

Ed and I discuss when we we need a moderator is needed and then talked to the other mods about candidates when it's time.
