I would like to hear your opinions on this set. I recently found a stack of these at Target for 50% off at $29.98. I'm not sure if this set will be a winner in the future. I want to make sure that it is a good investment at that price or if I should put my money elsewhere.

I personally think $30 is a pretty good entry cost for the set. I could see it $75-$85 in 2 years. Not a huge increase from MSRP, but a pretty good ROI from the purchase price. The plane looks really nice, IMO, so I would pick one up at $30 to build. The other builds are sort of "meh", like Stephen said.

it's a nice plane and reminds me of a WW2 corsair. At 30 I wouldn't hesitate...

Exactly what I thought it reminded me of; the "Whistling Death".

Honestly, the set looks beautiful from the box cover which is a rare thing indeed. The helicopter is probably the weakest of the designs but that means little when all are pretty good. The earlier Creator planes like Sonic Boom have done well so perhaps there is a chance for this one in a couple years. Besides, if people can get behind the latest Sopwith Camel that simply put is just a model airplane then why not this to some degree? In any case, half off is fantastic and I can't see how you could lose.

Set comes with 3 separate cardboard backed instruction books: Quick Build Hover Craft, Medium Build Helicopter, and Advanced Build Airplane. 8 unnumbered bags one of which has 2 bags for smaller elements in it. No stickers a few printed elements and very few technic pins. All sorted and the element that stands out the most is the chrome painted engine. Only on step 19 and the wings are a little flimsy for now.

It would have been nice if the yellow elements were red thus red white and blue. Having built the Sopwith already I think this would have been better to have built first and for $28.50 may be nice to have if you get the itch to open a Sopwith.

Looks good! If I stumble upon one on clearance at $30, I'd buy it to build. The element in your first picture looks pretty neat too. (I'm really digging the photo reviews people have been posting in the forums! Thanks guys!)

I don't think it will become a winner.

Wings are not good looking (it kind of reminds me the 7660 naboo starfighter), and the white rudder is ugly, it looks like a sock.

If I can have some with 50% off why not but otherwise, no thanks.

I would fear not to be able to sell it more than the actual MSRP.

I agree that is something to worry about with anything. If an investment requires to have been bought well below retail to earn enough back for covering all fees of later resale plus the initial buying price then it can be considered a bad buy although purchasing an item around half off or more gives a pretty good cushion towards any blowback if the set ends up staggering around retail after retirement.

Hmm, no wonder so many won't buy something unless it is discounted. It's like having an airbag in place just in case of a 'crash'.

Hard to explain in english, that's those moments when I feel bad... :(

Well, I'll try to explain myself. :)

Take a look at this:

lego_311.jpg

For me it means the item can be sold for Xmas at MSRP, and because of its quite low value it makes a nice (new) gift for families that haven't a lot of money. :)

Rest of the time, nearly no sells. Even for used sets.

Zero used items sold ? Does it mean it's so cool everybody want to keep it ? Or that it's not seeked after ?

If you look at this link, I think there are too much red lines (unsold sets)

http://www.ebay.fr/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_from=R40&LH_Complete=1&_nkw=lego+31011&rt=nc&LH_PrefLoc=2

When I said that I would grab some with a high discount, that's not because I'm so greedy or fearful and want not risk investing with my sets: that's just because I would REALLY fear to be stuck with THIS set. So getting some with a high discount, I could resell them with a discount too (compared to the MSRP). And hope it's enough to make these sets fly away. :P

That's what I did with galaxy squad and lone ranger sets. Bought 50 or even 60% off, resold with 30% off.

I didn't want to keep those sets, to join my Atlantis, Naboo gugnam and Podracer sets (only 1 of each, pfiu ! glad not to have some more, it's really taking dust).

Of course, I may be 200% wrong and this set will have a nice CAGR... or maybe not.

I have a bad feeling about this one, so I share my opinion.

I think that losing some money is something (invest $50, sell $40, so you lose $10: not a big deal), but beeing stuck with sets nobody wants is another thing (invest $50, no sales, so lose $50, and have to make gifts to your friends any family or be ok to highly discount your sales, and that's why I talked about discounts).

Well, I understand that people here like this plane (the propeller moves when you pull the rear wheel, it's a nice 3 in 1...) but because I do not believe in the potential of this set I think it's ok to share my thoughts.

Sorry if I offensed some people, it really wasn't my point ! Look, I love galaxy squad, especially the 70708 and the 70705 :D even if this theme is a failure as an investment.

I will not be glad to see my friends investors disappointed and think "too bad for this guy, stuck with 10 boxes, I had a bad feeling about it, I should have share my thoughts".

(I hope my english was good enough to be understood ! ^^ )

I hit 3 Targets today, and two of the stores had two copies of the set each. Unfortunately, they were only 30% off, at $48.98, so I'll be waiting for a steeper price drop. Out of curiousity, how many do you have access to?

I went to three Targets yesterday and one of them had three available, another one had 6-7, and the last one did not have any. I bought two this morning from the Target that had the most available. Hopefully the get discounted more later this month.

No investment here. People who.are buying this at a discount are obviouy addicted to discounts on any set. As someone else already pointed out, these don't sell. Bad investment. I actually thought this thread was headed in the right direction (logic) initially, alas the morons started to chime in...

These guys will.buy ANYTHING at half off. I'm now convinced.
