I really hope it's not Plagueis, it would make the Emporer less, had Plagueis survived. Just like bringing Maul back lessened Obi Wan. Palpatine was the epitome of evil, they should leave that alone and be creative enough to come up with a new villain.

Snoke = disfigured Jar Jar Binks :D

I don't know.  I really like the idea that Plagueis has been behind the scenes, and is really the big bad of the overall arc.

Conversely, make Snoke is a new character.  For some reason, the Empire decided to go to the Unknown Reaches, and reform as the First Order.  Snoke had to have provide *something* that would rally the remnants of the Empire around him and allow him to become Supreme Leader.

Saw it today - loved it despite the similar plot/story line of the OTs. Everything I would want from a Star Wars movie or for that matter, any great sci-fi movie. Going again tomorrow with my boys (ages 9 and 6).

They certainly seem to be setting it up for Rey to be Luke's daughter - would be surprised at this point if she's not. Loved the "unanswered" questions - can't wait till Ep VIII!!

The wreckage was from space battle, not Jedi battle.  By Rey's time, the Jedi has been in hiding / extinct for 50 years and the final Jedi vs Sith battle on DS was not necessarily broadcasted to the entire galaxy ;)

Think of it this way, how many highschool age students today can name famous generals from WW2?

Cannot be 50 years.... luke would be like 70-80... more like 30 years since ROTJ.

Just saw it this morning with my kids. I was very disappointed it was so similar to the original star wars on almost every plot point. Star Wars 2.0

The skeleton is similar, but the meat is very different.  I don't know how you could be disappointed but to each his own.  It was the most fun I've ever had at the theater, and everyone I was with thought the same thing.  It got even better for me on my second viewing and there is SOOOO much more to the story than I originally thought.  There are so many more plot points I missed, especially regarding the bigger picture of what is going on in the galaxy.

Spoilers follow:  At first I had a small problem with them rehashing the death star thing, and then on second viewing, I got it.  The First Order is NOT the Empire.  I knew that already, but I was thinking that it was really just a name change.  But it is soooo much more than that.  The First Order are fanatics.  They're insane.  They steal children from their families and train them as soldiers.  The New Order is operating on a warped view of the Empire.  The Emperor was evil, but not everyone who worked for the Empire was.  This is not the case with the New Order.  They sincerely have a perception of what the Empire was and they're taking the most extreme form of it and idolizing it.  So they said, "We're going to rebuild the thing that the Rebellion destroyed as a way of saying that we are not afraid of you."  We do the same thing in our own cultures today (rebuilding the World Trade Center, etc..)  And then the New Order used that weapon to destroy pretty much the only fleets that the New Republic had (as seen in The Force Awakens when the 5 planets are destroyed) and all that is left is the Resistance, led by Leia, which is basically a black-ops team for the New Republic.

I thought it was all genius.  And Kylo Ren is the most interesting on-screen villain since...well, for a long, long time.

IMO, the model JJ is using is Germany, WWII, as they rose back from the ashes. First Order is the WWII Nazis (aka fanatics).

Interesting I found him to be the weak link in the movie.

I felt he was a big baby with his little tantrums.

He's a poser, n o doubt.  And Rey called him out on it, when she said, "You're afraid you'll never be as strong as Darth Vader."  And to hear Kylo Ren talking to Vader's helmet, saying, "Forgive me...I feel the call to the light."  He is the inverse of Anakin, but he doesn't know it.  Anakin wanted to turn back but couldn't  ("It's too late for me" he told Luke)  Here you have a man who WANTS to let the dark in.  Something happened in his past that has so warped his mind, I don't think there is any redemption for him in this story.  And to see him banging on his blaster wound while fighting Rey...that was great.  He's feeding his pain, increasing his link to the dark side, because he knows he needs it because he had been weakened).  Fascinating stuff.

ok I understand now... the prequels do not exist in my Star Wars universe.

Are you talking about the wreckage on the planet of Jakku?  Because that is from the Battle of Jakku, which takes place one year after the events of Return of the Jedi.

Yes, I know that.  He also talked about how the Germans tried to regroup in Argentina and other places AFTER WWII.  Great stuff.

He is technically a baby villain, unlike say Vader who has been bad for 20 years when we met him. In some aspect this is a brand new and daring concept since we get to see (presumably) how the villain grows stronger along with the hero (presumably) in movie 8.

Exactly.  What, we just want another Vader?  We're seeing the evolution of the big-bad for this trilogy as we go along.  I love it.
