One more thing that rubbed me the wrong way :

how on earth didn't Rey and others know that the Jedi are real and all that good stuff. I mean she is a scavanger and the wreckage is there for all to see ?

The wreckage was from space battle, not Jedi battle.  By Rey's time, the Jedi has been in hiding / extinct for 50 years and the final Jedi vs Sith battle on DS was not necessarily broadcasted to the entire galaxy ;)

Think of it this way, how many highschool age students today can name famous generals from WW2?

Wasn't that the SSD ?

It was an SSD. The Empire had more than one SSD.

A great source for some background info is the Star Wars Visual Dictionary.  I looked through it yesterday.  They do confirm in there that the wreckage was another SSD.  There's also background on people and places that was cut from the movie.  There's a map, too (although that one I'm not too keen on).

They do give a little bit more background on Hux, and what happened to the Imperials

I agree with you.  Rey didn't know that Luke Skywalker and Jedi truly existed.  She's on a backwater planet, so only had heard rumors, etc.  And like you said, the Jedi have been gone for 50 years by now.  Even in TPM, in the Outer Rim planets (like Tatooine), the Jedi are known, but don't have an every day appearance.

Luke didn't seem to know anything about the Jedi or the force before Kenobi told him in ANH.  Rey lives on the same type of backwater planet, with little contact with the rest of the universe.

Obviously people are going to know about the war between the Rebellion and Empire, but with one Jedi and a couple of Sith in the mix, they would be legends outside of the group of people who knew them personally.

That's not how it works; that's not how any of this works.

What easter eggs did everyone pick out from the movie?

I had a chuckle when Finn was going through a toolbox on the Falcon, and tossed out the training remote from ANH.

This is what this thread is for :)

Some people wanted us to wait the weekend, or a week or something.  I'm just trying to be nice. :)

So, some detailed thoughts from me:

1. I *loved* that we just got the Lucasfilm logo fade out, and immediately went into the opening theme.  I thought I'd miss the 20th Century Fox opening theme, but I didn't miss it at all.

2. Rey - okay, is she a Skywalker?  Or a random force sensitive person?  Did she have training before? Was she at Luke's Academy?  Maybe she's Ezra's daughter?

3. Poe rocks.  He shot down something like 10 TIEs all in one scene, on Maz' planet.

4. Loved the humor.  It was just enough.  My favorites were when they were going through the toolbox and Rey yells at Finn "The one I'm pointing at!" and then has to say no a couple more times; "that's not how the Force works!"; "you're cold?"

I'll share more later.

Porkins lives on. Must be his son.

(Yes, I know it Greg Grunberg. He must have thought it was awesome to be a pilot)

My exact thoughts when watching the first time.

Some pages from the Star Wars Visual Dictionary can be found here.

Of note:

1. Greg Grunberg's character is "Snap" Wexley, which is the character Temmin Wexley in the Aftermath book that was released a couple months ago.  (Snap is his callsign).

2. Some interesting thoughts on Rey and the "Awakening" of the Force.

3. The immediate fate of Luke's lightsaber, after he lost in Cloud City, is mentioned.

4. The pilots entry says that a number of maneuvers were named after former Rebellion pilots, including the "Porkins Belly Run"

Also of note - the book describes the make up of the New Republic. Those scenes were cut from the film, but the Hosnian Prime was the current seat of the Government, and it rotated every few years.

This map also shows up in the SWVD:
