Sprocket77 Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 I think I'm going to be attacked here, but it was grand. I wanted it to be so much better than grand. Much better than the prequels, but no where near the original and the further I get away from having watched it, the more I'm picking pretty big holes in it. Kinda cool seeing a bit of Ireland being used in the movie though. (No spoilers there, Irish tourist board pushing it big time) Quote

I guess it is a candidate for a future UCS ship too. I will wait for a re-release of Kylo Ren ship what incorporates the moveable wings. The current model is simply wrong because Disney did not bother to inform the lego designers. Quote

People who do not want to read movie spoilers should not be coming to this thread that is titled "Movie Discussion". This is like prudes who claims to not want to watch porn, but still manage to "accidentally" click on websites with words like "porn, for adults only" on it. 1 Quote

jaisonline Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 Much better than the prequels, This comment alone is good enough for me and prob most folks. Quote

JJ stood on the shoulders of giant (George Lucas) and made the SW franchise even better. I like it that the storm troopers are humanized as we can feel their fear and anger. The new key actors are very good at expressing the emotions, and the lines are well written. This new movie has also addressed questions about why have another death star like weapon, and how such a huge weapon is powered. Although all are science fiction, but at least this new movie ties the logical loose ends better. I will say the acting in this one is a far improvement over the prequels. I got to admit, I was worried Harrison was going to give a half-assed performance, like he did in the last Indy film, but he didn't. He was very much as good as his old self and brought back Han Solo and carried it very well. Quote

Ed Mack Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 The movie was a visual and acoustic masterpiece. The sound was just amazing. The last scene was awesome. It kept you interested and engaged from the opening credits to the closing credits. This movie has to be seen like 5 or 6 times before you can see all the little trinkets and homages to the older movies. Even other Classic movies had an influence on this one. I thought I wouldn't like John Boyega, he was my favorite character. Daisy Ridley is not only easy on the eyes, she kicks ass. Classic movie in every sense of the word. I cannot wait to see it again. 4 Quote

Girls will be emulating her worldwide. Really opens up the franchise to a new market. I’m all in on Rey's Speeder. 4 Quote

I'm not a big 3D fan, but it was ok. I still think the best use of 3D ever was "Jackass 3D". I can't wait to see it unfettered in 2D. Just a few more thoughts on the movie. I'm still a little disappointed in the story. It pretty much followed the story outlined by the online leaks almost a year ago. Yes, the dialogue, casting, and movie overall are fantastic. The overarching story, at least for this setup was kind of weak and I can't argue with folks who say it's somewhat a carbon copy of "A New Hope". I can't wait to see where they go with EP VIII. Many plot points and back stories are not answered here. Disney has a bunch of different avenues to explore these and they will in books, video games, comic books, web series, etc. Many many stories to tell and lots of new questions are opened in the movie. It's not only a step in the right direction, but it's a big step in the right direction. 1 Quote
fossilrock Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 (edited) I will say that fan that wrote the synopsis that he put together from a bunch of leaks that he pieced together was almost dead on. Can't wait to read his Rogue One version. Spoiler I'd say the best part of this movie was the acting. This was one of Lucas's flaws in that he wasn't an actors director. He was genius in making the vast universe, and all the variety of different storylines, but when came to the little nuances of getting the best performance out of an actor - well that wasn't his best quality. In this one the acting was very good. Daisy Ridley did an amazing job, and John Boyega's Finn is perhaps my favorite part of the whole movie. It will be interesting to see more of his backstory and where he came from in future episodes. I personally found the entire starkiller base theme kinda trite. Yeah, it's bigger than the original death star, but come on...find something new to do. I felt like that portion, and even the flow to the end was already done in ANH and ROTJ. But, it's setup perfectly for Ep8. While Ep7 was Han Solo's movie, we pretty much know whose movie it's going to be in Ep8. And I really hope the movie is more based on the new characters, because they were all a lot of fun. Edited December 18, 2015 by fossilrock 1 Quote

She was an incredible strong, able woman as a lead. Very refreshing, especially in sci-fi. She was my favorite character in the movie. 5 hours ago, Sprocket77 said: Kinda cool seeing a bit of Ireland being used in the movie though. Again, that's isn't spoiler at all - it's just an admiration for the scenery for the shots that were filmed in Ireland. 4 hours ago, Locutus001 said: Dude you are unfair! It's a bummer that the spoiler tags don't follow through on the mobile phone. I agree that we could be a little light on the spoilers through the weekend, however, let's be realistic, too. This is a movie discussion thread. I stayed away for almost two months, because I didn't want to be spoiled. So while I get it, I also think if you don't want to run the risk of being spoiled, just stay away from this thread for a couple of days. 1 Quote

zskid00 Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 (edited) I thought the movie was really good for many of the points you guys have already listed, but here is what I didn't like: WARNING: Spoilers ahead Spoiler WARNING: Spoilers ahead 1) Another frickin' Death Star? Are you kidding me? I knew this was probably coming with the movie poster revealing it but do we have to go back to this same plot device from the OT for a third time? Good thing it had a weak spot in that oscillator and the sanitation man knew all about it or the Resistance would have been wiped out. 2) Why does the Resistance still feel like the Rebellion after all these years? I thought they won the war in ROTJ and would have some more resources at their disposal. They sure seemed like the rag-tag band of underdogs from the OT and I was expecting them to have a stronger presence. 3) The Kylo Ren relation. This is a huge universe and I don't see the need to graft in more main characters to the Skywalker family tree. I get that it gives more weight to the death scene but found it unnecessary. I hope that this series of movies doesn't become about redeeming Kylo Ren. I also hope that Rey isn't revealed to be an abandoned bastard child of Luke or something. That would also be disappointing for me. Edited December 18, 2015 by zskid00 Quote
zskid00 Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 (edited) One more thing is that the new ship designs were severely lacking compared to what we saw in the PT. You basically had the Falcon with retreads of the X-wing, TIE fighter, and Star Destroyer with slight modifications. If there were any interesting new vehicles they were buried so far in the background that I couldn't tell what they were. Kylo Ren's shuttle was ok but the troop transporters did nothing for me. jaisonline Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 We are just a little "pumped" for the movie. 5 more mins until the movie previews begin. Yeah, eating popcorn with the mask is kinda hard. The Lego Star Wars commercial just played and it was awesome. 9 Quote
