  • More LEGO Ghostbusters In 2016 - UPDATE

    Alpinemaps

Hope you didn't spend all your money on the new LEGO Ghostbusters Headquarters.

In November, we mentioned the possibility of new LEGO Ghostbusters sets coming, based on a press release from Sony Pictures, the rights holder to Ghostbusters franchise and the 2016 reboot film's distributor.

Paul Feig, director of the new film confirmed today on Twitter that there indeed will be LEGO sets based on the movie.  He states "Fun stuff coming from LEGO too. Just FYI. Sorry, bank account."

Note this is ahead of any official word from The LEGO Group.

The movie should no doubt drive buyers to all things Ghostbusters, including 21108 Ghostbusters Ecto-1.  Will Ecto-1 disappear before the movie hits the shelves?  Will there be a 2016 edition of Ecto-1 with the new Ghostbusters team?  Share your opinion with us below.

glad to hear that, I hope they retire ecto1 soon and we won't see a remake, but I'm sure I'm wrong at least partially....well, it's good news to me anyway, will b buying more ecto1s regardless.

Best case scenario: 21108 is retired to make way for the new Ecto-1,2, 3, or whatever sets with female GB minifigs (or mini-dolls? )

Let's hope the Ideas one (21108) is considered part of the new Lego Ghosbusters line. Worst-case would be if they came up with a new Ecto-1 oustide of the Ideas line.

It would be nice to see some sets based on the older films.  I believe Sony Pictures owns the rights to those two films as well.  If they make a 99.99 Stay Puff Marshmallow Man, i'd buy quite a few copies of it.... One to build, and a few for investment.

I know you can't say this means something or doesn't mean something, but when i was in the lego store the other day, i noticed there are large decals on the back of the store displays that face in to the store (as opposed to out to the mall where the set is).

On the GBHQ display, the back sticker has a very prominent view of the Ecto 1 and its model number. HUGE image. And of course, there are none in stock.

So they're still advertising the Ecto pretty heavily, linking it with the GBHQ, and you would THINK they wouldn't bother to do that if it was going away, but we've read these tea leaves wrong before too.

SSD half page ad in a catalog after retirement anyone?

I know the possibility of LEGO sets based on the new movie are very likely, but how does this tweet confirm anything?  I could take this to mean that maybe he saw the new HQ playset and was responding to that.  This is jumping the gun a bit in my opinion.

LEGO needs production material in order to make sets which the studio provides, like scripts and footage.

I hope there will be cool new ghosts and elements I can use to boost the GBHQ. And yes, Stay Puft please.

Still believe that movie will be a B-category gimmicky flop.

How can a prolonged shelf life be considered a good thing??

I think he's saying that WORST case scenario is a brand new (possibly better) Ecto-1 that stays for 3 more years.

A lesser evil would be allowing the existing Ecto to be part of the new line, and stick around a short while.

    Just my interpretation

The new movie would have to make Star Wars money for any set based on it to stay on the shelf for more than 1.5 year.

Right but what if they use the new film as an excuse to improve on the classic Ecto 1?

What if they do the Ecto 1a from Ghostbusters 2? Basically the same car.

What if they do a UCS?

All risks. Some less likely than others.

Best stay away from the GB line then ;)

I dunno but totally sense a big movie tank here.  The Lone Ranger, John Carter, Pan and Prince of Persia level. Hopefully I'm wrong...

I would wager though that all sets with this new cast will be on clearance shelves soon enough if the movie flatlines.

Slimer is their last hope along with a bunch of cameos.

I hope you're not wrong.  The shorter amount of time I have to see and hear about this thing the better.

    Maybe we'll get a Stay Puft, BB-8, and Grape Ape - 3 in 1

The Giant Man/Ant Man might be the example of Stay Puft vs the Ghostbusters.   It's not as if LEGO cares about scale.  He wouldn't be small, just really, really far away.

If you look on the german TLG Site there is an own Ghostbusters Category only with the GBHQ. I thought from the first time I saw this, there will be more sets coming. And actually the sets have to be from the old GB films. Wouldn't make sense if there will be sets from the new film! I think there are two obvious arguments:

    1. GBHQ refers only to the old films (minifigs and scenes in the house refer only to the old movies)

    2. If you think of the Turtles Line Lego set line, there were two lines too. One refering to the nickelodeon cartoon theme and the other to the "new" Turtles cinema film. They had different categories on the lego website!

So, I am sure there will be good old stuff for sets. The new movie will be getting its own lego set category when they release other sets.

I have no doubt the Ecto-1 will be gold in 1-2 years!!!

I also hope we get a nice StayPuffed Set, would awesome if it would be UCS like and sizes to the GBHQ!

100% agree, however if we use the SW parallel, original franchise Ghostbusters items may well benefit even more from the hype around the new film.

I'm not ashamed to say that I enjoyed Bridesmaids and Spy, heck even The Heat had a few moments.

Totally needless reboot and it might well flop, but if it hits the right notes and is entertaining enough it could do well. Look at what the reskinned Jurassic Park (and associated LEGO sets) did last year.

Bridesmaid was a total success and funny movie.  It deserved the praise.  This in the other head could be worse than  Porkys and Jawa 4 sequels.

Seriously, does anyone here really want to see 3 of the 4 new main characters in IMAX 3D?  I rather see 3 of the 4 original stars moving around with canes and walkers.

    image.thumb.jpeg.0be083a52b671bdcb27fc14

    Anyway....

So if the movie tanks, what happens to the 2 sets based on the original films?  Will guys in / near their 40s hate the new film so much it drives us away from the old film merchandise?  Prob the opposite like what the SW prequels did for the original trilogy. It made us yearn for items related to the first 3 films.

in conclusion, ghostbusters 1 (and even 2) stuff will be in high demand regardless of the new film's outcome.  Long-term growth of the first film merchandise will be longer if the new film succeeds.

Just2Good over at Eurobricks stated today that 75828, the one set that everyone seems to know is going to be a Ghostbusters set, will be the rebooted Ecto-1.

i dunno folks.  the more i learn about this film, the less i'm likely going to view it at a theater and more i think the Lego theme won't be around too long if many of the sets center around this film.

as a father of a daughter, i don't even care about the all female cast.  that's a good idea.   but come one.. a nerdy Thor ? seriously?   that would be like having a nerdy kelly lebrock or christy brinkley in the first film.  heck, a James Bond film tried taking a "voted most beautiful person"...that experiement failed.

This movie is going to be complete garbage like 90% of these reboots and remakes and nostalgia fueled sequels are. They always lose what made them popular in the first place in the name of, "Hey, remember this intellectual property that existed in the 80s? Yeah we do too! Buy!". There are a few exceptions, such as the brilliant new Mad Max movie, but for the most part they are just a poorly disguised money grab that isn't even entertaining. I will avoid these sets like the plague. I am picturing Lone Ranger or Prince of Persia.

Oh, c'mon, if Hollywood believed Denise Richard + glasses = nuclear scientist in Bond movie, this was not that big of a stretch :D

The sad thing is the kids these days are even more pressured to buy in to all of these body image craps
